Pediatric Critical Care Dr. Patrick McQuillen is an pediatric critical care specialist, or intensivist, with special interests in neurologic and cardiac intensive care. With colleagues in Child Neurology, he is leading research on advanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques and MR spectroscopy to assess brain injury in infants requiring cardiopulmonary bypass to correct congenital heart disease. This work will guide future clinical trials of neuroprotective strategies to prevent brain injury associated with congenital heart disease. McQuillen earned an undergraduate degree at Stanford University, medical training at the University of California, San Diego and pediatric training at UCSF. He completed postdoctoral training in pediatric intensive care at UCSF and training in developmental neuroscience at UC Berkeley before joining UCSF in 1997 as an assistant adjunct professor of pediatrics. He is a member of the Neonatal Brain Disorders Laboratory and maintains a research program on the mechanisms of hypoxic-ischemic cerebral injury during brain development.
