Dr. Patrick Austin Oconnell, MD

Dr. Oconnell left Duke to develop his own idea of the perfect practice. He shuns the model that processes the Patient within 20 minutes so profits can be maximized. He runs a non profit office. Dr. O'connell spends as much time with you as he needs. He never rushes you, he explains everything in detail, asks a milllion questions, speaks to you as if you actually have a brain. His practice reflects his religious beliefs which some may AT FIRST wonder about. Well, I am an Athiest. I am also a Pro Choice Activist. One would think I would run from the place but this is what I want to underscore - Dr. O'connell is so true to his faith that he turns away no one. he cares deeply for everyone. His heart is in it!! If a patient has a specific need that is in conflict with is beliefs the Patient is referred elsewhere for a particular remedy. Dr. Oconnell will not leave you!! His committment to his faith is as deep as his committment to the Patient. I really mean this. When you… go to him you feel like you have an opportunity to experience what Patient based care USED to be like. This is very difficult to find. Well, this Athiest really wants you to try this devout Christian as a Practitioner! Who would have imagined??? That's how good he is and you are missing out if you don't give him a try. It's good, old fashioned care that is imposible to find.

Dr. O'Connell has been my PCP for 10 years and I have been pleased with his care.

I have been seeing Dr O'Connell for many years. He is thorough in his exam. asks pertinent questions, listens and takes time with his patients. The wait does vary but you can be assured he has your ear when you are seen.

Excellent doctor who is current on his knowledge; personable and clear in his recommendations on care.

I received totally ineffective antibiotics and was billed twice as much as my PCP. I couldn't get an appointment with my PCP that day but I should have waited. I now see why he has appointments available.

Dr. O'Connell is always prompt, answers your questions, and is very professional. He does not waste your time and listens intently to understand. I highly recommend him.

To previous reviewer--Dr. O'Connell is bound by certain practices because of where he works (and who he works for), not because of his personal policies. He has been my PCP for 5 years now and he has always provided me excellent care.

Dr. O'Connell seeks to charge his patients as much as possible. Duke Medicine allows their doctors to double-bill their patients for office visits. The more you talk with Dr. O'Connell, the more you will pay. If you go for an annual physical and discuss any of your health issues, you will be charged for an annual physical AND an office visit, since according to him, talking is not part of an annual physical. If you go for a specific health reason and talk about other health issues, you will be billed for 2 separate office visits. Unbelievable! Do yourself a favor and try another doctor!
