Patrick Sylvester, MD, is a pulmonologist and critical care physician. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor of science degree before going on to graduate summa cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. A member of the American College of Physicians, American College of Emergency Medicine and American College of Chest Physicians, he is the author of numerous scholarly articles and textbook chapters on pulmonology and emergency medicine.

I took my son in, knowing he had RSV because his twin had just had it and he had run some fevers the weekend prior. His fevers resolved, but came back much higher several days later. His breathing was rapid and temp remained high after medication. I took him the the ED with concerns of pneumonia. Dr. Sylvester brushed us off as soon as his RSV came back positive. He declined to do a chest xray. He told us several times he doesn't work in ED and just 'moonlights' and that 'kids scare the heck out of him.' He brought in an ultrasound machine and looked at my son's lungs, which I'm sure he did just to pacify us since this is not a reliable way to look at the lungs for pneumonia. My son ended up with a fever over 104 just 2 days later and was admitted to the hospital for....you guessed it...pneumonia!!! If he had taken us seriously, perhaps oral antibiotics could have been started and prevented my son from getting much sicker.
