Dr. Paul Lawrence Baker, MD

I was treated by Dr. Baker in the ER at Penrose St. Francis (off of Woodmen) for a spontaneous miscarriage. It was my first pregnancy and I was 11 weeks. Dr. Baker was very prompt as he came in 5-10 minutes after I was settled into a room (very short wait for an ER doctor). However, he never explained what was going on to me. After I had a vaginal ultrasound done, Dr. Baker came in, shook his head and said, "It doesn't look good. I'm expecting your HCG levels to continue to go down and you'll miscarry within the next couple of days. You want 10 fingers and 10 toes and this one just didn't make the cut." OUCH. Needless to say, his bedside manner needs a lot of improvement. Also, he never explained to me what to expect with a natural miscarriage. He literally just told me my HCG levels would continue to drop and I'd miscarry. He didn't tell me what is normal, what should be a concern, or what my body would go through. I was totally unprepared. Thankfully, my GYN (Dr. Cher Moseman) is… FANTASTIC and in my follow-up appointment with her, she explained what to expect from then on out. Unfortunately, I was pretty much through it all by then. Dr. Moseman even got answers for me like when my baby died, how far along I was, etc. Things Dr. Baker should have told me.

As an ER doc, he is terrible, disrespectful and doesn't give you the time to explain what's going on. He labels patients as what he thinks is right yet refuses to admit when he doesn't know how to treat certain conditions.

I saw Dr. Baker in the ER of St. Francis Hospital. I was being treated for a UTI, and he was the doctor who treated me. He explained everything to my satisfaction, was very professional and inspired confidence.
