Dr. Paul A. Haskins, MD

I don't know where to start. I am visiting from out of state and was brought to the Carilion ED for issues normally cared for my providers back home. I did not tell him that I myself I am a specialist in New York. At the start of the visit, he was terse and appeared minimally engaged (almost smug) as I sat there in my hospital gown and struggling to breathe due to situations out of my control. He suggested I take two agents - an antibiotic and steroid (neither of which I would prescribe to my own patients due to lack of evidence and concern for concepts such as C. diff and multi-drug resistance). His response to my laborious doubts was "this will get you where you need to be, please reach out with any questions." I did in fact try to reach out with questions after this visit; he did not respond. I went back to my provider in New York after a week and was provided with something that was a bit more gentle on the lungs and GI system. Not sure what this doctor was aiming toward -- would… recommend some strong education before allowing him to care for patients in the future.

Overheard him talking with another staff member in the hallway. The other staff member was questioning one of the decisions he had made. Didn't catch the entire story, but he said "don't question me, the decision has been made and I'm not changing it." The condescending tone and refusal to acknowledge that he may have been wrong made me wonder if the prescription he had written for me was right. Don't know if other Carilion providers are like this but will not return to find out.

I understand the ER is a busy place but the shear arrogance and rudeness of this physician is incomprehensible. I am a fellow physician that doesn't necessarily pull the "I am a physician" card. Upon my visit I didn't state I was a doctor and had he only known he wouldn't have treated me the way he did. This guy has a chip on his shoulder and acts like he is better then everyone else just because he's a physician. We can't act like this....just because we went to school longer then most people doesn't give us the right to treat others disrespectfully. I wish he could take a step back and think that patients are sick....and need our care. If you read this Dr. Haskins....you are not better then everyone else....you are simply a physician. Be proud you attained it but don't use it as a status symbol.

Very thorough, precautious doctor! I was recently diagnosed with lymes disease. I had a spinal tap done, but b/c of the fever he wanted to take a Brain CT Scan to be sure there were no abcess before proceeding with the tap. Everything thoroughly explained before, during and after the procedure. If I could give a 10 star rating for this doctor and the staff, I most definitely would in a heartbeat!
