Dr. Paul R Makela I, MD

Dr. Makela of Trinity Health treated me with such disrespect and insensitivity today that I had to post this negative review. If I could give negative stars I would. He had an issue with me asking questions prior to a procedure. His response was “I just explained it.” As I attempted to share my feelings of disappointment and anger, he said I had used up my appointment time, 20 minutes. I don’t care that he’s “been doing this for 25 years”, he will never provide a service to me again! I agree with his statement that “we are just not a good match”! How unprofessional!

I was scheduled for a prolapse organ surgery which consists of a sacral couple plexi and a hysterectomy by Mackla. I have had 3 vaginal exams by him he missed an ulcer that was behind my cervix and did not treat the granuloma that was on my cervix this could have caused me to have a really bad infection if I would have had the surgery by him. I could have had a fistula to my bladder or to my intestines or could have had abscesses and got septic and ended up in the ICU unit. Dr. Mackla could not remember that I never had surgery done by him he asked me three times when I went to his office if he had done surgery on me all he had to do was look at my chart. I started to lose confidence in him even though he's already scheduled my surgery. The hospital could not give me my pre-op orders until three days before the surgery we're all other hospitals have given it to you at least two weeks ahead of time. The hospital is very unorganized in their pre-op area. After I have done all the… surgical prep. I went to the hospital at the time they told me to go 5:30 in the morning then told me my time had changed and it wouldn't be till 8:30 in the morning that was fine I needed to call the test which I got. I asked the pre-op nurse has a lot of questions I wanted to know what it all entailed of the surgery and the medication I would be receiving and if I were be giving antibiotics nothing unreasonable to ask them. The pre-op nurses told me I had to go back home and that they would call when I was ready for my surgery would be another hour or two hours. While I was at home dr. Makela called me and canceled my Surgery because I've asked too many questions to their staff this is unacceptable . I was appalled to see that he would do such a thing when I needed the surgery done. I recently had the surgery done at St Joseph's hospital out of Pontiac by a great surgeon dr. Corsi they were wonderful from the beginning of pre-op the answered all my questions to the end of my post-op care I would recommend him to anyone that needs organ prolapse surgery a sacralcolpoplexy a hysterectomy he also does posterior colporrhaphy.I gave this Hospital greater than a 5-star rating they were wonderful can't say the same about Saint Mary's very disappointed in St Marys and dr. Makela for canceling my surgery but I did have it done I am now five weeks out and I'm doing wonderful if I were you I would get a second opinion to what he tells you or treat you badly

I just had surgery last Tuesday it was extensive and went great! He explained every step of the way and after he explained everything then too. I am very happy with the awesome care I received!

Dr. Makela performed several surgeries on my post menopausal body. He was kind, professional and kept me informed. He visited me daily while in the hospital and stayed to talk. Unlike other doctors he took the time to make sure I was comfortable. He used robotic surgery which helped with a quick recovery.

He was very helpful in diagnosing me correctly after several years of complaining and being misdiagnosed by other doctors... Very thankful I am on the right path to start feeling better. He spends as much time as you need with you and your spouse that was really appreciated.
