Dr. Paul F. Simonelli, MD, PhD

Paul Simonelli, MD, PhD, is chair of the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine for the Geisinger Medicine Institute. He is also the systemwide director of Geisinger’s Division of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine and the director of Population Health.Dr. Simonelli received his medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and his doctorate in biochemistry from the City University of New York. He completed his residency at New York–Presbyterian Hospital and a fellowship in Pulmonary Disease at Columbia University. He is board certified in pulmonary disease. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American College of Physician Executives and the American Thoracic Society.Dr. Simonelli came to Geisinger in 2008 after serving on the faculty of Columbia University in clinical, research and administrative roles. He has helped oversee the significant expansion of …pulmonary and sleep services for Geisinger and helped found Geisinger’s pulmonary–critical care fellowship in 2013. Dr. Simonelli has been active in clinical research and has been the site principle investigator for several funded pulmonary medicine studies. He has special areas of interest in advanced lung disease, interstitial lung disease and chronic airways disease including asthma and COPD. He has been active nationally in the COPD Foundation, recently serving as chair of its Clinical Advisory Committee. Dr. Simonelli chairs the section on Advanced Lung Disease within the Pulmonary Department, and he has a lead role in systemwide protocol development and population management of asthma and COPD. He has also taken a leadership role in Geisinger’s Care Redesign Initiative.In his free time, Dr. Simonelli enjoys gardening, hiking and reading.
