Dr. Pedro Malavet, MD

If people are wondering why some reviews for Dr. Pedro Malavet are good and some are bad - it is because the good reviews are from male patients. Pedro Malavet (I will not call him a doctor) HATES women. I was another unfortunate female patient victim of his. I was there for eye and lung problems since childhood, and I had those medical records with me that my doctors gave me to bring. He treated me like he was a veterinarian, and I was a stray dog. I showed him my medical records. He said “hmph”, gave them back to me, then lied in the medical records and said no medical history for ophthalmology and pulmonary among other things. He kept asking instead if I had muscle problems and seemed fixated on that. I kept telling him NO, and re-iterated the eye and lung problems I was there for. I requested my medical records of him afterwards, and lo and behold, he wrote “the patient’s primary concern is muscle pain which cannot be explained.” He lied. This guy is not smart enough to be a real… doctor. His bio supposedly says he went to medical school in Puerto Rico. But Pedro Malavet is a common name there, like John Smith here, so he is probably using someone else’s medical diploma. Then back to my clinic visit, randomly in the middle of the appointment, he said it’s time to do a little neurological test. He told me to stand in the middle of the room on one leg like a crane. It was taking forever and it was hard for me to balance. Then he walked over and shoved me really hard and hurt me. That was his special neurological test. Then after that he told me to lie down on the exam table, and there was no chaperone in the room. Then he started hyperventilating and panting, and yanked my pants and underpants down by surprise, and put his face in my lower private area and just kept it there. This is the most traumatizing thing that has happened to me in my adult life. I have had nightmares from this trauma for years. MAYO CLINIC – get your act together and investigate this guy! Also, he ordered tests and physical therapy (?) and things that were not related to any of my complaints or medical issues, just to run up my bill since insurance would cover it. I did not go to those tests and appointments, because that would have been dishonest. So he is involved in insurance fraud too.

Do not ever go to this doctor if you are a woman! He is a male chauvinist pig! I went to see him and he stated "I see women like you all of the time. You don't need a doctor, you need a psychiatrist" before even examining me or gathering a history. He had the audacity to put in my chart I was belligerent after he insulted me. This doctor is trash and should not be in medicine. I am now permanently disabled because this doctor refused to take me seriously and his colleagues backed him up. I had a septic infection and Chronic Lyme Disease. He could have helped, but he didn't care at all. Now I have permanent joint damage in all of my joints and can barely walk. I need joint replacement surgeries on multiple joints. It all could have been stopped had he just done his job. You ruined my life. Get out of medicine!!

I can confirm every negative comment made on this site. He completely misdiagnosed me and the additional year it took me to get the right diagnosis, my condition worsened significantly. He is rude, disrespectful and demeaning. If I could have given him a zero, I would. He tells everyone they have fibromyalgia or central sensitization and he sees "hundreds of people like me every year". I now know I have a very real and serious medical condition diagnosed by a talented cardiologist. As with other patients, he did not read any of the medical reports I brought and he had his mind made up before I walked in the door. What an arrogant jerk and a total waste of time and money.

This man is toxic. I am currently in therapy for what he did to me.

I have an appointment coming up with Dr. Malavet. What can I expect?

Doctor was very arrogant and acted like he didn’t care to listen to me..he made me feel like I was making up my symptoms!!! How horrible!! I waited months to go there in desperation to get help!!

I’ve been struggling with SERIOUS health conditions for over a year now and haven’t been able to move from bed. Within the first 5 minutes of explaining my story/symptoms to Dr. Malavet he cut me off and said he didn’t need to hear anymore bc he “knew what it was”. He handed me a fibromyalgia booklet and told me “this is what you have”. I politely explained to him why I didn’t think it was correct and how it doesn’t explain 95% of my symptoms. he laughed and belittled me, saying “I’ve been doing this for years and heard hundreds of cases like yours.” I’ve been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia many times before but after traveling all the way to Mayo just to hear that again... it leaves you completely hopeless. He said these things just happen and there’s no cure for it, so I’ll just have to deal with it. After telling him I physically cannot leave my house anymore without assistance he told me “at least you don’t have cancer or ALS, and you can leave the house if you REALLY wanted to”.… There was no point in arguing once he had his mind set. I left leaving worse about my situation than when I had come in. He flat out made me feel stupid and kept trying to push how much smarter he was because he’s been doing this for “many many years”. If you feel this way after seeing him, you aren’t alone.

I found Dr.Malavet to be thorough, a good listener, direct and to the point. He spent time going through my family and my history. He had recommendations for next steps and he answered my questions and concerns.

Absolutely horrible Doctor. He "sees people like you every day, hundreds like you every year." If you came to the mayo clinic for a diagnosis after years of suffering with no diagnosis and have chronic pain, he will just tell you you have fibromyalgia (or central sensatization syndrome, a fancy name for it) and that the mayo clinic probably won't find anything else wrong (since your prior blood tests don't show an "organic" cause for your symptoms...except if they had shown that, you wouldn't be seeing him...you'd already have a diagnosis). He told me I was lucky I was still walking around, I shouldn't be taking pain medicine... And don't I know there are people with multiple sclerosis who are in wheelchairs who don't need pain medicine? He refused to focus on anything except my pain, even though I have multiple tests showing there are cartilage problems in multiple areas of my body (my nasal septum has a huge hole in it and there are a finite number of things that cause that),… positive nerve conduction studies showing peripheral nerve damage in my left leg that isn't being caused by my back, and a lot of other actual symptoms that go far beyond "pain." He kept saying he sees people like me everyday and the chances of me having an autoimmune disease are like 1 in a million, so I asked him if he has ever seen someone with my symptoms and chronic pain AND a nasal septum that is disintegrating, and he admitted he has NEVER seen someone like that before. Ergo, he does NOT see people like me "everyday." I could end up with a saddle nose deformity if the damage isn't halted and he just said "nothing to do for that anyway, sorry...sometimes things happen and we don't know why." Ummm, no. That's not an acceptable answer. When someone is facing a significant facial deformity (which they CAN fix surgically), you don't shrug your shoulders and say "don't know what caused it, can't fix it, no point figuring it out, live with it." As I said, only a few things cause septums to disappear and none of them are good. He actually said "the nose thing could be wegener's granulomatosis or polychondritis, but those would explain your pain...they don't cause arthritis and joint pain." And he's wrong. Completely and utterly wrong. More than 1/3 of people with polychondritis have joint pain and inflammation. Read descriptions of pain by people who've been diagnosed with it, and you'll see that the pain is intense and excruciating with both wegener's and polychondritis. He is beyond uninformed. His bedside manner is wretched. He is just a hateful, hurtful man. His reviews on ratemd.com tell stories similar to mine. He will pigeonhole you immediately without looking at your records and will refuse to keep an open mind (but you'll be told to keep an open mind about the fibromyalgia you absolutely have and autoimmune disease you absolutely don't have). And that 1 in a million chance I had of having an autoimmune disease? I guess he was right about that. I was instead diagnosed by a mayo clinic rheumatologist with a 3-5 people per million disease - the polychondritis (whadaya know???? Who's have guessed???). And according to the rheumatologist, my symptoms are classic. And it doesn't usually show up in blood tests. Don't go to this guy. If you get assigned to him through the diagnostic clinic, just grit your teeth and get through the appointment. All he's really there for us to set you up with further testing and orders to see specialists. And for that, I will say he actually a fine job and ordered the appropriate tests and specialists.

I do not recommend this doctor. I am surprised he is at Mayo. On the first visit, he failed to look at my medical records after I had worked very hard to gather them. He belittled my symptoms and sent me down a path that was a waste of time. He basically told me not to come back. I left without a diagnosis and am still sick...symptoms for over a year now.
