Dr. Perry Howard Zand, MD

He was awesome and the best, but he has totally retired over a year now, maybe closer to 2 years.

Dr. Zand is one of the increasingly few Psychiatrists that seems to actually practice medicine. He spends time with him patients and is very thorough discussing medications and treatment options. Every appointment you get a reminder call and every appointment he is on time, and always takes your blood pressure and assesses your general health with questions. He takes and consults his notes on you and is responsive to discussing your symptoms, diagnosis and their treatment with answers that are thorough. When on a medication regime I have had periodic lab work and EKG scripts written as his request to assure my medication not negatively affecting your health. I have been seeing psychiatrists for over 30 years -- have seen perhaps 10 or 12 over the years (so my personal experience is based on that). Early on I saw insurance and HMOs often had many Drs. become very-short-visit-write-a medicine script-in-and-out service; it was hard to find a doctor who would do more and those were often… prohibitively expensive. None of the others ever assessed general health nor had lab tests run. None. This is not Dr. Zand. I have seen Dr. Zand for over 10 years. Early on he refined my diagnosis from what other doctors just rubber-stamped and on a few occasions he has changed my medication -- all to get it right and to get best treatment. My response to care has been the best I ever had. He does not take a large number of insurances -- but his rates are reasonable for the level of medical care that you get -- and he very rarely raises his rates -- I recall only once in 10-plus years. He is serious and focused. In the end very little is as important as your mental health and mine has improved and been consistently very good under Dr. Zand's care. This had not been the case before I began seeing him.

Dr. Zand is older and comes from a generation of doctors who were trained to spend time with their patients - not just prescribe meds. He really listens to his patients and goes beyond the symptom checklists.

Dr. Zand's approach to me as a patient was very cold, distant, and disinterested. I have visited other psychiatrists in the past myself, as well as been to psychiatric appointments with an elderly family member from time to time. I have also, of course, had experiences with many other physicians over time. I have never experienced a bedside manner so dismissive and condescending as Dr. Zand's from any doctor I have ever met. As such, I cannot recommend his services to anyone.

Received treatment over a year, but did not find the therapy helpful. Finally just gave up as it just was not worth the time, effort or cost to continue to meet with him.

I always feel heard and understood.

Dr.Zand was extremely knowlegable and personable. He was the first psychiatrist to properly diagnose and treat my condition.

As long as you have no need for any assistance outside your scheduled session time, he may be an okay psychiatrist for some people. However, if you have any questions or concerns, or there are any insurance problems, outside of your scheduled appointment, he is not at all interested in helping the patient. Your his patient during the session, outside of that time, you need to look elsewhere for help. One is a walking dollar sign. If there is no payment for his time, then there is also no assistance. I suggest searching out for a doctor who is willing to provide his patient with the best care he can offer both within and otuside scheduled appointments. These true doctors still exist, but this is not one of them. I would absolutely not recommend this doctor.

This doctor is amiable. Attentive during sessions, but will take short phone calls which count against your session time. Seems to use one method of approaching certain problems regardless of patient expressing it is not working for him or her. Rather relunctant to do anything requiring much effort outside of scheduled appointments. I would not recommend him to a friend or family member.
