Dr. Peter Howard Byers, MD

Clearly he knows his stuff — as in he is a world class scientist on collagen disorders. However, I have to agree with those who call out the lack of listening. He simply did not even hear, let alone transcribe, the proper medical or clinical history. I contacted him no less than 3 times, all via different channels, to correct the record; and he never responded. And like another reviewer, I had an issue during surgery. So I don’t appreciate the attitude and lack of attentiveness. Truly, I do understand what goes on behind the scenes in healthcare. But there was something amiss here, and he did not correct it. That’s unacceptable. I agree that he should mentor a junior colleague and pass off these duties to someone more used to the way the medical world functions today: patients speak up if something is incorrect (and doctors respond, without being forced, as it is required by law when an amendment request is made), women can have medical expertise too (yes, his wife does, but… patients may as well), you answer your Ecare/MyChart. That is part of providing care. If you are too busy for that, delegate that responsibility to junior or support staff, apologize, and/or retire.

Dr. Byers is, without a doubt, one of the kindest and most generous doctors practicing medicine today. Intelligent, patient and quick to prioritize those in need, Dr. Byers is a superb class act. Patients don't know what goes on behind-the-scenes so they may be quick to judge, but they're truly lucky to have such a caring and devoted advocate in the field of genetics.

I do not understand why there are negative comments on dr Byers, the only reason why I think they are being negative is only because these patients did not have the vascular type which is what he specializes in, not HEDS. He’s been nothing but kind and caring towards me, not only that but he made it possible for me to get the better tests, not only has he helped me medically but also emotionally because of support groups he offers, and not only that but Incase of medical emergency he will provide you with his contact information to give to a ER, which in fact saves lives if it weren’t for my genetics doctors I wouldn’t be here today because the average doctor knows nothing of this disorder, I’ve had 2 bowel ruptures under the age of 20. And if it weren’t for my doctor on the phone to the staff I would of died . It’s quite upsetting the reviews he received, rather untrue compared to my experience. If you have the vascular form he is the best to go, he is doing everything in his power… to help find a cure and to start trials, Because he CARES

Told me there was nothing wrong with me and rudely dismissed me. Some time after that I had a problem from a surgery and the head surgeon came and told me there was something not right with my connective tissue. After that I finally got help and was diagnosed. Why did I have to leave Washington to get help? It was a nightmare.

VERY disappointing. Waited 8 months to get an appointment, and drove 7 hours to come have someone tell me there is nothing wrong with me basically. Very upsetting since I thought this was my 'answer' & when i got absolutely nothing out of it.

Dr. Byers has trouble with people. Classic egotistical jerk physician who belittles his patients rather than showing enough concern to thoroughly investigate and spend proper time on people. We felt he rushed through our charts and medical records without even looking at the material. This led to a frustrating experience and an inaccurate diagnosis which was later corrected by a different geneticist. He seems like a smart enough guy but it's time to retire and hand the job over to a more caring doc.

A real jerk this one. Has a phony demeaner but not informative at all and was very offensive. If I hadn't been so surprised I would have told him off. His staff seems genuine. I bet they do all the work on the research and he takes all the credit. I wish I had my time and money back from this appointment

I too saw Dr. Byers after being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Type III, or the hypermobility type with some vascular features. I was very impressed and felt he went above and beyond to try and help me. He spoke with my Dr back home for a total of over 3 hrs giving her information about EDS. He was so thorough with his exam and was able to diagnose my POTS or postural orthostaic tachicardia syndrome. Keep in mind that he is a Geneticist and Professor of Pathology and Genetics at the U of WA and is one of the only Dr's in the U.S. to do Genetic Research on Ehlers-Danlos. He was full of information and recommendations that I was able to take back to my regular physician to try and set up a treatment plan. He was very honest about all we just don't know about EDS and how to go about treating it. I think he deserves a huge award for what he has done above and beyond to help all of us with collagen disorders and EDS.
