Dr. Peter Warren Callander, MD

Excellent surgeon. He is thorough and listened to my concerns. He has a great website with lots of information. I had my left hip replaced. Three weeks after surgery I was walking a mile.

I had a full knee replacement in May 2024. For a year I had physical therapy three times per week, used a Dynasplint, and other methods but I could not get my leg to bend past 95 degrees and it would not go straight. I was in constant pain, walked with a limp, and was always swollen. In June 2026 Dr. Callander performed a revision. He exchanged the plastic liner with one 2 sizes smaller, removed part of the meniscus that was not removed during the knee replacement, and removed scar tissue. Within a few days I was amazed at how great I felt! I’m now six weeks post-op with no pain, bend to 120 degrees, fully straight, and no swelling. I can’t say enough good things about him and his staff.

After seven visits with two different Orthopedic Surgeons reviewing an old problematic knee replacement, each had no positive diagnosis for my knee buckling, Dr. Callander, my savior, found and repaired the problem quickly and effectively. The revision was completed and resolved the issue, Any patient should know he is a five star for sure!

After braking off the right femur neck in June 2023 on a bike ride in Munich and having it re-attached to the femur in an emergency hospital, x-rays revealed a rapid decline of the femur neck in 2025. I was referred to Dr. Callander at California Pacific Orthopaedics in San Francisco, who specializes in hip replacements and the operation was scheduled for and performed in early February 2026. The day after the operation started with two unexpected delightful surprises: - The new hip worked so well, that the crutches were banned right back into storage. - The shortened right leg as a result of the femur neck re-attachment in Germany had been brought back as part of the operation to match the good leg! I can't overstate how good that feels! A month after the operation I was back in the saddle for my daily 12 mile morning bike in hilly San Francisco. Dr. Callander is an excellent surgeon! He performed a total hip replacement using the anterior approach. He explained why he uses this method and answered all of my questions. He is very personable and caring. The surgery took just over an hour and I was able to go home the same day. He uses a local anesthesia versus a general, along with a drug that enabled me to sleep through the procedure. He also gave me a numbing agent that lasted a day and a half so I was not experiencing any initial pain. I was able to use mostly over the counter pain medication to control pain with occasional prescription pain medicine at night. I would recommend getting an ice machine to help with initial swelling. I used crutches for a couple of days and was able to walk unaided after that. It has been nine weeks since my surgery and I am able to resume all of my normal activities including biking, walking and golf with no discomfort or stiffness I previously experienced. If you need a hip… replacement, I would highly recommend Dr. Callander!

Dr. Callendar performed my recent procedure, and I couldn't be happier with the experience. From start to finish, he made me feel extremely comfortable and took the time to listen to all my concerns and address them thoroughly. I felt completely confident having him as my surgeon. The entire support system was equally impressive. Dr. Callendar's office staff was incredibly helpful and responsive—scheduling appointments was a breeze, and they got back to me quickly whenever I had questions. Communication was seamless throughout the process. The surgical and support team at Novato Hospital was top notch. Everything was handled professionally and smoothly, from intake through the actual surgery to the nursing and rehab services afterward. The level of care I received was truly exceptional. Dr. Callander is wonderful. I am 83 years old. He replaced my right hip on 8/11/2025. I had immediate pain relief and excellent mobility. I did my necessary physical therapy. I was free of the walker and cane within 3 weeks. I continue to get stronger every day. I must also commend his entire staff...friendly, caring and totally professional. He worked a miracle. I am a lifelong athlete, 54 yrs old when I had total hip replacement in my left hip, in Oct 2024. I was concerned about surgery, recovery, and long-term ability to continue sports (surfing, mountain biking, hiking). I had not enjoyed surfing for years due to pain. And prior to surgery could not even walk the dog any longer due to bone on bone. I had waited too long, just accepting the pain. 5 months post surgery, my new hip feels stronger than my original. I enjoy pain free surfing, unlimited walking/hiking, and mountain biking is equally enjoyable. My only regret is waiting so long to get the surgery done. Dr. Callander was super all the way through, leading into surgery, surgery itself, and post/recovery questions. My only advice is to take PT seriously, do what they ask, and do it for a couple months or more if you have the time. I wish I had BOTH hips artificial, it's really an amazing quality of life change. Dr Callander recently did my left hip replacement with great success. He and his team have been very responsive. Another doctor replacement my right hip 3 years ago and I am still struggling with the hip. Hopefully Dr Callander can work his magic and solve the problems with my right hip. I recommend Dr Peter Callander 100%!
