I recently had minimally invasive endoscopic surgery performed by Dr. Peter Derman at the L4–L5 level to remove a cyst that was compressing my nerve root and causing excruciating pain from my lower back all the way down into my foot. I sought 5 second opinions when I was told I needed surgery. What differentiated Dr. Derman was he explained all the options, their pros and cons then made his suggestion. Dr Derman is a highly talented minimally invasive surgeon. He accomplished what he promised for me to be pain free allowing me to get back to my surgeries and to take care of my patients. His bedside manner is second to none. His office staff is kind and willing to help all along the way. You can tell with certainty that he truly enjoys his occupation!

As an ER physician, I see many patients with radicular nerve pain both from cervical and lumbar spine disease. I never fully appreciated the incapacitating level of pain until I developed cervical (C6) symptoms. I finally relented to surgery, and I am very glad that I chose Dr. Derman and the minimally invasive posterior surgery. I must admit that my pain tolerance is no better than anyone else, but after the procedure, I did not have to take any of the pain medication or muscle relaxant prescribed. My pain was immediately and completely gone and the persistent numbness in my left index fingertip is gradually improving. Also, I like the idea of having no plate and screws in my neck. Please read this!! I have 3 words for you. Just do it. This man will take care of you. And let me tell you why. I am 24 years old and have had severe sciatic pain for the last 2 and a half years going down my right leg. I had a ruptured L5 S1 from a freak accident, and let me tell you when I say I couldn’t do anything, I couldn’t even touch my kneecaps. I did everything under the sun to heal it naturally and absolutely nothing worked. Also why I was hurt for that long because we do not believe in surgery! But i finally gave in and set up an appointment. It was quick and easy and made me very excited after speaking with Dr. Derman. Surgery day rolled around i was nervous but i shouldn’t have been because the experience was un real. I was there for probably a total of 3 hours from prep to walking out the door after back surgery pain free. AND YES I SAID WALKING. I walked in there with a pain level of about an 8 and when I woke up I popped 1 light pain pill and walked right out that door… with 0 pain!! And no I was not all drugged up. Also to top it off, I never took another pain pill!!! NOT ONE! That’s how good this surgery was. 3 hour drive home, right after I woke from surgery, me and my mom stopped about 40 minutes out of the surgery and got some Mexican food and drove the rest of the way. Here’s the fun part. The next morning I woke up not even 24 hours after my surgery with 0 pain medication and felt 100% for the first time in 2 and a half years. So to celebrate…. I packed my bags and flew out to Florida to go on a cruise to the Bahamas at 6:00 AM the very next morning! Not even 72 hours after surgery I was headed to the Bahamas with 0 back pain! I felt normal everyone. NORMAL! Bout a quarter of an inch little tiny cut on my back is all I got from the surgery. People couldn’t even believe me when they saw me walk and moving around like a normal human. It was truly life changing. So just trust me, this is advanced, Dr Derman knows exactly what he’s doing, go get it taken care of and go on with your life. You will not regret it. Dr. Derman and his staff were a breath of fresh air! I was initially scheduled for a consultation with one of Dr. Derman’s partners. During that initial conversation, it was determined that I would be a candidate for endoscopic discectomy and Dr. Derman was identified as the appropriate surgeon for this procedure. I live out of town and the staff was kind enough to set me up for a telemedicine appointment since I’d already been seen in person for the first consult. Dr. Derman was willing to spend significant time with me to make sure I fully understood the options and to make sure all of my questions were answered. In the end, we decided to follow Dr. Derman’s recommendation and hold off on surgery. A conservative surgeon is a good surgeon! Thank you, Dr. Derman!

Dr. Peter Derman operated on me in late December – performing an Ultra-Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Discectomy on a herniated disc at L3-L2. My only other option was yet another disc fusion. For three months prior to this surgery, I had been in unimaginable pain. When I awoke from surgery, the pain from the herniated disc was GONE. I experienced some minimal pain at the surgery site for a few day. As I understand, Dr. Derman is one of only 10 surgeons in the country performing this particular surgery. What a relief Dr. Derman and this surgery has meant for me. I’m now released to resume my normal activities – including occasional golf – YEA!
