I was a patient of Dr Ungaro at first my girlfriend an I didn't really care for him, but soon realized that he was the best one we could have got. He really knows what he is doing.he might not have very good bedside manners but he is good at what he does had me on the road to recovery. We really miss him now wish we could have him back. He went somewhere else and we ended up with a doctor that has messed up his progress. Dr Ungaro in our book is the best Dr we could have ever gotten.

He takes time to talk to you and seems like a good person.

He took the time to listen! Did a thorough examine, lots of blood work and sent me for a test, I go back in two weeks and after many doctors and no answers, I finally feel like I have a doctor that will find out what is going on with me!

I had Dr. Ungaro for 10 years while he was at the Zimmer Center. His disposition took getting used to. My wife and I called him "Doctor death". He did not sugarcoat anything. We found him to be honest.... some times it seemed too honest. We disagreed on some things. When discussing cancer prognosis, one person can be inspired to fight the impossible and the next devastated by it. How can a doctor know who will and who won't? I have a rare incurable cancer, Malignant Carcinoid Syndrome for 12 years and I know he was "in MY corner".

Dr. Ungaro cared for my sister as she fought cancer. I attended a key visit with Dr. Ungaro. He was courteous and compassionate during the visit. Since my sister was the patient, she had most of the conversation with Dr. Ungaro. My sister had encouraged me to ask Dr. Ungaro questions. When I started to ask some of the "tough" questions about my sister's condition, I had to stand between Dr. Ungaro and the door to keep him in the room. He clearly wanted to tell my sister what she wanted to hear, and leave, but did not to tell her what she needed to hear regarding her treatment and condition. My sister was optimistic she could beat her cancer. Dr. Ungaro facilitated that thought. I felt Dr. Ungaro was a Pied Piper compared to a skilled practitioner. I think Dr. Ungaro needs to retire. My observation is that he was more interested in a revenue stream from a patient than trying to figure out what might be done for her. I do not feel he is current in his medical education… for oncology care. He may have been to the education courses, but that was a requirement to maintain his license and I question what he may have learned. As they say, "Do you know what the call the doctor that graduated last in their medical class? Doctor." Dr Ungaro gave me the impression he was practicing for the money. My sister passed away. She was a tough case, but possibly not terminal. I think Dr. Ungaro's inability to address tough questions and consult with other physicians may have let to her passing.

Twelve years ago I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin Lymphoma; I was one of the lucky ones for my cancer went dormant for twelve years. I had researched every web site to learn as much as I could about my cancer. Back then we didnt have the internet like we do today and I was determined to know as much as I could about my cancer. After many doctors I ended up in Wilmington. Dr. Ungaro had laid out the choices. One (1) being surgery to remove the tumor, I would still have the cancer, two (2) radiation to shrink the tumor again I would still have the cancer, three (3) was the choice to go with Chemotherapy. The drugs of today work wonders, with my first three (3) day session behind me the tumor had shrunk 80%, I was pleased. The second session the tumor was almost gone. The third session the tumor was gone and etc; etc: My last CT scan and blood work report, indicating an excellent result from my chemotherapy sessions. I know as they knew it was a hard trying time in my life.Would like… to thank the Doctors and Staff for a job well done, I could not have made it through these sessions without your caring help and support, I cannot express myself enough.From the time I signed in, called to go back to the chemo clinic, sat down, checked my vital signs, offered a cup of coffee, a warm blanket and started a session. My family member was diagnosed stage iv and as bad as that is he was still highly optimistic and ready to fight until his visit with Dr. Ungaro. He basically said if the chemo doesn't work then we will make you comfortable. No positive motivation whatsoever. Then he had the nerve to tell his family that a procedure we requested was "not covered by medicare". My father has three insurances plus medicare, as well as a decent bank account that and three professional daughters that are willing to pay for whatever he needs if it will ensure a better quality of life. I am an educated woman that has 15 years in the clinical trials industry (including Oncology) and he wrote that I did not understand the situation after I question new methods of treatment. I honestly think he did not know how to respond to my inquiries and the only response I got from him was (and I quote) "No, that is not how it works" although in his report he also stated "I explained in length to his daughter why… patients such as this are not surgical candidates." Amazing, I would hate to see the less technical short explanation. This doctor has the bedside manner of a knob and honestly is seems more interested in money than saving lives. Who cares if medicare doesn't cover a procedure if it can prolong and/ or improve one's quality of life.
