Dr. Peter Michael Odell, MD

I have been a patient of Dr. Odell for over 30 years. He and his staff have been a model of professionalism and courtesy. Last month I had two cataracts removed in two procedures two weeks apart. The procedures were quick and painless and, more importantly, a complete success. For the first time in several years I can see clearly again. I thank him for the success of the procedures.

You will need to be prepared to wait for your appointment and the some of the Staff are rude.

I have been a patient of Dr. Peter Odell for over two decades. He was recommended to me by a neighbor who still is a patient of Dr. Odell's. During this time, he has treated and advised me in connection with various problems with my eyes, including glaucoma, cataracts, and retina issues. He has performed two cataract surgeries and recommended a physician to perform my retina surgery. I have complete confidence in Dr. Odell, and I would recommend him to others without reservation.

I am so grateful to Dr. O'Dell for taking such good care of me. My eyes are everything to me and when I couldn't see out of one side, he got me in immediately and took care of me through my cataract surgery and after. My surgery was in the small percent that don't go as well as expected and I felt very taken care of the whole way through. Doctors don't always follow up and show they care and Dr. O'Dell was absolutely wonderful. He was always there and I have made a full recovery. I rest easy knowing that he is my eye doctor. And everyone on his staff is impeccable.

I recently had my second cataract surgery with Dr. Odell. He is an amazing surgeon and also was wonderful both pre-surgery and with my post-surgery followups. He has been my eye doctor for close to 30 years and my children see him as well. I have referred him to several friends, all of whom are extremely happy with the care he and his office provide.

Dr. Odell is the best! My family and I have been patients for many years and have found Dr. Odell to be the rare doctor in this day and age that spends time with his patients in an unhurried, thoughtful and personal fashion. I have yet to meet another doctor that has the same caring bedside and professional manner. The office staff is unusually efficient and also caring, always quick to remember personal details. From my perspective, his reputation as one of the elite ophthalmologists in NYC is well-deserved.

Went to Dr Odell based on recommendations from several people including my internist. Needed simple cataract removal with lens implant. Came out of under-sedated surgery to learn that the cataract had been removed but lens not implanted. I will not go into the intricacies of the followup for the past 6 months. But, bottom line is this man told me first, that in 2 weeks or so he would be able to implant the lens in the front (not the preferred place) rather than the back of cornea (where he failed). Two weeks passed into many many weeks. Meanwhile, I could not walk the streets of Manhattan alone because of loss of vision and balance. Time went on. His 'fix' was going to be to put the new lens (after surgery failure) into the front. I asked him if it was possible to put the lens into back (after healing from his first surgery) as is usually done. His answer: 'Someone might be able to do that but I don't know if he could. I can't do that'. He never recommended that I consult… a doctor who might be able to do the 'fix' the right way. This awful experience is too long to repeat in detail. But to summarize: I consulted several (5) other ophthalmologists who all said that they thought there was enough tissue left to insert a lens in the right place (posterior vs anterior) but that the eye needed months to recover from first surgery. I finally found an excellent ophthalmologist who could implant the lens in the preferred location and do a corneal transplant if that proved necessary. It has taken 6 months of my life being unable to walk outside alone. I have lost musculature in my legs, confidence about walking, and have lost so many corneal cells that I may need a corneal transplant. But at least now (after finding a wonderful surgeon), I can see.

Not worth the money. Unclear why this experience is better than any others. After a recommendation, I reluctantly went ahead and spent more than $1,000 on an exam and contacts. (I wasn't told the price up front, but I blame myself for not asking.) I don't think my diagnosis was accurate, and he didn't seem to really believe what I told him about what I was seeing. He did, however, take time with me, explain the details and was willing to work with me until I was comfortable, though truthfully I never really ended up satisfied. One other note: I made an appointment over the phone but when I called the day before to confirm, they didn't have my appointment in the books. I had to wait another month and a half to be seen.
