Dr. Philip H Artenberg

I was referred to Dr. Artenberg for a biopsy of a possible mouth lesion. He never performed the biopsy. Instead, he removed a completely normal section of my lower jaw, and specifically told me not to take antibiotics afterwards. Within 4 hours, I was in severe pain, and was running a fever. To make a long story short, as a result of his incompetence, I developed an infection in my jaw which required multiple extensive surgical debridements, and five weeks of intravenous antibiotics. I spent 6 months on opioids to control the pain. At no point did he perform the procedure for which I was referred to him. He also waited 4 months after the procedure to notify the referring dentist that he had seen me on the one and only day I saw Dr. Artenberg, and claimed that he performed the unnecessary procedure with no problems. None of this is true. In addition, he never biopsied the mouth lesion, which is the only reason I was referred to him. This is not the first time… this has occurred. He previously left a piece of surgical equipment buried in a patient's mouth, and sutured it closed, telling the patient that he would remove it at the next appointment. (The patient became severely ill, required surgery to remove the equipment, and was hospitalized.) He was successfully sued for this. He has also been sued several other times. He was recently removed from the dental school faculty at NYU Medical Center. This man is extremely dangerous, and should not be permitted to practice dentistry.

I recently had a dental surgical procedure performed by Dr. Artenberg. The procedure turned out to be completely unnecessary, and I was left with a serious mouth infection which required additional surgery to correct the problem he had created. He also did not give me any medications for thee severe pain I had afterwards, did not give me a follow-up appointment, or any further information about what I would need to do after the procedure. He simply told me to call him if there were any problems. He also didn't send any information about the procedure to the referring dentists. Do not have any dental or surgical work done by this person!
