Medicine is advancing dramatically as today's cutting-edge discoveries become standard practice tomorrow. In today's medicine, lab results often replace the importance of asking the patient questions, diagnostic tools are substituted for a thorough examination, and the quantity of patients seen diminishes the quality of care. This fundamental challenge of balancing the art, science and business of medicine faces all physicians. I have long desired to become a physician who promotes health and well-being for my patients on a personal level. I know that I have to learn not only the technical skills to heal, but also the art of medicine to cure. My interest in medicine was sparked by an incident in high school while volunteering with the emergency care unit. On a cardiac arrest call, I watched in astonishment as the paramedics revived our lifeless patient. At that moment, I wanted to have the knowledge and ability to heal. I knew that I wanted to be a doctor.
