Dr. Philip Sungling Yuan, MD

Before 2018 I had severe pain due to spinal cord issues. Then Dr Yuan performed a lumbar laminectomy, L3-S1, and instrumented fusion, LL4-5. The pain went away, I was able to get regular and good night's sleep, and returned to the gym a few months later.. Dr Yuan replace a cyst on my wife’s spinal cord about 3 weeks ago. Before the surgery, she was unable to get in and out of her car and walk without pain. She is now back to her regular work schedule.

In 2013 I was hospitalized with a serious life-threatening infection of my spinal cord stimulator; Dr. Yuan worked with myself, my husband and the Dr. that implanted the device in Kansas City until he had a clear path. He then operated successfully to remove the device, and at my request months later installed a new updated version. I have since had the device, which was acting up (not the fault of Dr Yuan), removed by him and also had my old fusion screws shaved down as they were sticking out and causing pain. Now 6 years later I am willing to drive almost 2 hours from where I moved to go see him as my back is deteriorating and I am again in need of a great spinal doctor; there is no one else I can imagine going to and trusting like I do Dr. Yuan!

As a paid physician reviewer for Horizon Blue Cross of New Jersey Dr Yuan denied payment for treatment of epidural injections performed on my patient. I am a spinal surgeon practicing in NJ and have been seeing my patient for over a year. He has a spinal condition called isthmic spondylolisthesis and neuroforaminal stenosis. He was having severe low back and right leg pain. Initially I recommended a structured exercise routine and anit-inflammatory medication as is standard care. He lost 30lbs and went to the gym consistently over the next few months but was still having pain. At that point I recommended epidurals, as is standard care after failing a home exercise program. Hss insurance plan did not require authorization, so I performed the injections and followed up with him afterwards. After the injections he still was symptomatic and required surgery, which was approved by his insurance and performed by me. His insurance plan refused to pay me for the epidural injections claiming… they were not medically necessary. I appealed to Dr Yuan, speaking with him personally explaining the situation and his history and he denied payment for all epidurals. Unfortunately Dr Yuan is what is wrong with medicine. By being an employed agent of the insurance company he put Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ's interests ahead of my patient's health and well being.

I began seeing Dr Yuan in 2012 with back and neck issues. He did not rush me into surgery. He tried all all avenues before we decided surgery was the best way for me. And both surgeries were successful. And I am recovering well. The staff at Memorial Orthopaedic is incredible. Thank you Dr Yuan. Be blessed.

I've been seeing Dr. Yuan for over five years. He is thorough and does not rush into surgery, but will resort to surgery if the patient prefers that route. I've had two back surgeries and Dr. Yuan did them both. I have no idea what other remarks were regarding his bedside manner and ability to read x-rays, MRI, and computer skills. He knows exactly what he's doing. All the nurses in surgery told me he is the best and I agree! My recovery from both surgeries were the best. Now Memorial Hospital experience..... there's the challenge. I have never had an inpatient surgery there that did not give me anx….. I've been there three times now and they could do so much better. I've been inpatient other hospitals and the difference is big. But, I'll go to Memorial as long as Dr. Yuan is doing the surgery.

Dr. Yuan is a fabulous doctor. He is professional, caring and he tries to figure out a solution for your problem. He is a great surgeon and a hard worker.

HORRIBLE DOCTOR!!! HORRIBLE!!!!!! Wouldn't give me the paperwork I needed for insurance/provider. Never faced me when in the exam room; always was typing on the computer. Could never get in touch with him. Was always overbooked by an hour plus. No help!!! Couldn't get my injury better.

Not help at all. Won't even turn around and talk with you face to face in exam room. Will cancel appointments and not let you know. Won't return calls/emails/voicemails. Overall horrible/unhelpful physician!

The worse doctor's appointment ever!! I have worked for Long Beach Memorial for 24 years and have had the best doctors at memorial in every event I have had and my family as well. He was unprofessional, did not know how to open an MRI result in his computer, did not explain the MRI findings, did not give any options of treatment for my husband who was in pain with three herniated disc, leg numbness , etc etc, after three months of therapy. On the other hand, he ordered a couple plain x-Rays when he already had a CT and an MRI that showed the problems mentioned prior, totally unnecessary work up that he did not even review with us at that time. he then offered physical therapy for two months and a prednisone pill pack for seven days. Thank God the consult was as bad as it was and we were able to find another doctor who knew exactly my husbands problem and was able to help him with the best outcomes after surgery. What he did not know was that u husband's brother is a radiologist and… he had advised us properly.

Dr Philip Yuan is a great doctor. He needs a decent staff. It took me over a month to even schedule an appointment, because of probnlems with my autorization which no one discussed wityh my PCP. I had to keep calling to see if my authorizations were authorized or not, usually more than 2 weeks. If the office staff would support the doctor more it would be a more enjoyable experience. Once again the doctor is excellent and very patient oriented.
