He graduated from St. Mary's University in 1973 and from the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio Dental School in 1982. Since graduation, he has been active in both the public and private practice of dentistry. He served as a Clinic Director for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and as an adjunct faculty member for the Department of Community Dentistry at UTHSCSA. He has completed hundreds of hours of continuing education including a mini-residency in hospital dentistry, and advanced training in orthodontics from Invisalign, Orthoclear, the US Dental Institute, and the American Orthodontic Society. Dr. Laven has practiced with his long time friend, Dr. Ramos, since 2003.
