My thyroid appointment with this doctor was really disappointing and as a result, after 18 years, I am leaving UC Davis entirely. He practically shamed me for being anxious during the appointment by pointing out how he could feel the anxiety in the room and that I should calm down. He spent 30 minutes giving me a condescending lesson on how to read medical ultra sound test results. That isn't my job. That's his job and he should've politely explained what my results were in terms that I can understand. He said there's nothing we can do about the multiple enlarged lumps in my throat. He had no advice on how to alter my diet and explained there isn't any data out there at all to suggest diet could help in any way. That hasn't been the findings of my own research. He was ON HIS PHONE multiple times. He didn't do an exam until the end of the appt and said "oh, you have an enlarged thyroid, you may want to have that removed," then ran out of the room. I was left feeling confused, shamed,… and frustrated. I have every right to be anxious, I'm not the doctor and I count on professionals to handle me with respect and care. That didn't happen today. I found another doctor and will get a second opinion. And, even if the results and the guidance are exactly the same, I'm positive I will be treated more kindly.
