Dr. Pratik Shirish Desai, MD

If you are going to have a procedure or test with Dr. Partik S. Desai, ASK how will you be notified of the results (e.g., phone call, follow-up appointment). Unfortunately, they do not let you schedule a follow-up appointment even when they know a follow-up will be required after the results are ready. They require the results before scheduling a follow-up which puts you at the end of the list (the day of appointment that determines you need a procedure + days until procedure + days after procedure waiting for results = then you get added to the end of the schedule which adds more days to the total). You may not hear your results until a month after the results were ready. My father was scheduled for a bone biopsy and his results were ready the same week (biopsy Monday 11/21/22, results ready Wednesday 11/23/22). On Thanksgiving (Thursday, 11/24/22), I checked my father's MyChart and saw the results were positive for metastatic carcinoma (i.e., stage IV cancer). I did not tell my… family because I wanted a professional doctor to explain the results and deliver the news to my parents the best way possible. I wondered why Dr. Desai's office did not call on the day the results were ready (Wednesday 11/23/22) to notify him immediately of his terminal diagnosis. At the very least, to add him to the schedule as Urgent. I was understanding that it was the week of Thanksgiving and I would wait for the day after Thanksgiving (Friday 11/25/22) before considering calling their office. By Tuesday (11/29/22, 1 week + 1 day since his procedure, almost a week since the results have been ready), we still did not receive a call to *schedule* the follow-up discussion of the results. I then called his office and they told me the earliest is early January - a month after the results to tell a patient they have a terminal prognosis. After explaining the test and the positive result to the scheduler, they transfered me to "Urgent" scheduling which told me the earliest they have is early January. After re-explaining the test and positive result, they put me on hold to discuss more with Pratik Desai's team. They came back with 12/7/22 as the earliest to follow-up and tell a patient they have cancer and, more specifically, they have terminal cancer. Their follow-up, their *Urgent" follow-up, was still two weeks after the results were ready. Unfortunately, we ultimately couldn't make the follow-up appointment since my father had to be admitted to the ER that week. Since the hospital staff would assume my family is aware of the two week old results of terminal cancer, I had to tell my parents before the ambulance took them to the hospital. During my dad's stay at the hospital, Dr. Desai nor any of his associates came to visit or check-up on his health. We expected an apology or, at the very least, an explanation of the lack of follow-up urgency for his bone biopsy results. I left messages, but Dr. Desai never returned any phone calls. The 2/5 star rating is only because, when he was present, he was nice and took time to explain things. However, his lack of returning messages, poor scheduling of follow-ups, and his inability to check on one of HIS patients admitted to the hospital, brings the overall rating to fairly low. To Dr. Pratik S. Desai and his scheduling staff, If a follow-up is needed, schedule the follow-up a week after the procedure to allow time for the results to be ready. Additionally, consider a weekly time block saved for urgent in-person test result discussions. If someone is being told they have terminal cancer, squeeze them in immediately. Do not force your patients to wait weeks to a month for their results.

Dr. Desai is a very personable individual who cares about the patient on a sincere level and takes the quality time to explain your option treatments and his various procedures. Voted by Washingtonian Magazine multiple times as one of the "Top One Hundred " doctors in the tri-state area. He personally saved my life and or quality of life on two seperate occassions and is a very talented and caring physician.

Dr. Desai is compassionate, attentive to your physical and emotional needs. He takes time to listen to you, advise you and is always available if you need him before and after a surgery to insure your questions and concerns are met. I have complete confidence and trust in him. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer several years ago and relied on him for advising me on what to do, He performed robotic surgery and continues to follow my care.

This group is very professional, polite and caring. Dr. Pratek Desai is awesome. He has done so much to help me.

They try to give appointment and initially said we accept insurance later called and advised to pay out of pocket . They don;t accept insurance.

Dr. Pratik Desai was incredible to me, my wife and family thru a extremely difficult time. His confidence and ability to help me understand what was going on helped me and my family thru it all. No reason to leave Prince William County to travel to Baltimore or who knows where.... The best is right here in Woodbridge! I owe my life to Dr. Desai

Arrived with catheter in place, waited less than 5 monutes, assitant provided initial intro to removing catheter. serous problem became obvious and instatnt support was available by an associate doctor and assistant. Bleedong issue contained and care was provided with great consideration by the staff. Several followup visits were quicklky addressed (in munutes) and questions and advice were readily given and recommendations provided. I am not happy with the final disgnosis but that's not the doctor's problem, it's mine.If you want a doctor who will spend time to insure you are aware of the symptoms, the diagnosis, the options and a recommendation for the solution he considers best for you, Dr. Pratik Desai is the kind of doctor you will appreciate. Even if you don't like what you learn.

Dr Pratik Desai was highly professional,very knowledgeable, and has been a pleasure throughout my whole prostate cancer experience. The Divinci surgery was painless and the healing process was rapid. I totally recommendPotomic Urology, Potomac Hospital, and specifically Dr Desai.

For someone who has a "Top Doctor" plaque on his wall, I expected a little better from Pratik Desai's Urology practice. I understand that I'm not the only patient the physician is seeing, but after waiting 20 minutes from the time of the scheduled appointment (I discount the time in the lobby), physicians lose points with me, and Desai made me wait a HALF HOUR. He said that he was seeing other patients, but if that's the case, he should be using his nursing staff to give preliminary questions to patients for their visit to make things more expedient. Speaking of which, it should not take TWO nurses to perform ONE blood draw. While I do have a condition that affects my circulation, I didn't have any problems like that previously. And for some reason, not only did it take more than three days to get a simple blood draw and urinalysis back, the office did not bother to inform me of the results on the day they arrived (I had to call on the fourth day to find out). If you are dire need of… a urological consult, you can go to Potomac Urology on that note, but don't settle for Desai if you don't have to.

Dr Desai has treated me for a kidney stone and prostate cancer. He did a DaVinci Robotic Radical Prostatectomy on me and my recovery was remarkable. 15 months later and I would barely know I had it done. Recommend him to anyone needing a good urologist with a cancer specialty.
