I left a review several months ago regarding the care that my mother received. A few weeks later when she returned for a follow up appointment This physician proceeded to shut the office door and have a discussion with my father and my mother regarding the negative review and how it was adversely affecting her business at this time. My mom called me later that evening and pleaded for me to remove the review from the websites I had posted it on as she felt tremendous guilt placed on her by the physician and was afraid that it may adversely affect the care she will be given in the future. I cannot tell you how angry this made my father, my sister and I as we felt that the last thing that my terminally diagnosed mother needed to deal with and have on her mind was the problems of her doctor. I have waited to post an additional review in respect of my mother. However she passed away last week and I felt the need to inform potential future patients of what they may experience with this… doctor. I wanted to add that during one of my mothers appointments that she attended with my father as she was only able to have one additional person with her, my father brought up to this physician that he felt my mother was short of breath may have low oxygen saturation and may need oxygen. This doctor informed him that if my mother needed oxygen she would not be able to sit there and have a conversation with her. At no time during this visit did anyone check her oxygen level. Less than a week later while at home my mother had severe shortness of breath. My father checked her oxygen saturation at home and it was in the low 70s. He contacted the doctor on call and was told that he needed to send my mother to the hospital 911. She had to go to the emergency room by herself because no one was allowed in with her stay there for two nights they put her on steroids and gave her oxygen and sent her home. Something that could easily have been addressed at a prior appointment and could have avoided this emergency. My mother also had another emergency room visit because her pain was not being controlled properly. At the emergency room, they put her on a Fentanyl patch and Dilaudid and sent her home. The following day they had an online appointment with this physician and were reprimanded for going to the emergency room and having her pain medication messed with. This physician stated she could not handle the pain medication anymore and that my mother would have to go to a pain clinic. Fortunately my mother‘s family doctor stepped in and said that he would take care of her pain medication until she can get an appointment with a pain clinic. Unfortunately this regimen did not work and my mother ended up at inpatient hospice for pain management. While at hospice, during the hospice physician’s visit the hospice physician wanted to know why my mother’s oncologist had not referred her to him upon initiation of her care. He stated that he trained her and thought that he taught her better than that. He stated that since my mother was having palliative care from the beginning she should have been referred to a palliative pain care physician. He could have easily had her pain under control from day one. They got her on a Methadone regimen and her pain improved tremendously. I don’t understand how an oncologist says they don’t deal with pain management. One of the main components to cancer is pain. We knew my mother had limited time and that the chemotherapy would probably not work. Our only concern was that she was comfortable throughout this illness and until the time that she passed. I think these are normal and reasonable expectations. I thank God everyday for the hospice team because in spite of this physician’s poor care she remained comfortable for the remainder of her life. I would also like to state that this physician has my phone number on file and can feel free to contact me regarding this review as she should have done the first time. A dying woman shouldn’t be burdened with your financial problems. Shame on you!!!
