Dr. Raj Nagji Sureja, MD

This lying coward was unwilling to update my VA Disability because he "felt uncomfortable" correcting the fact that I had been misdiagnosed by the military as having Migraines, when the root cause of the headaches is Degenerative Disc Disease. Yet he was perfectly willing to repeatedly charge me thousands of dollars for treatments. Veterans should avoid this hack and his place of employment at all cost!

Before having to choose a pain management doctor I did my research. I must admit some reviews of Dr Sureja had me worried, but let me be the first to say, take what you read with a grain of salt. Everyone experience will be different and I can only speak on my satisfaction. I am going to him after an extensive 3rd spinal fusion surgery that included decompression of my spinal cord at T1-T3. My pain is constant, but not once has He treated me as a drug seeker, I've never had to plead for my med refills nor feel as if I'm being unheard and most important he make me feel part of my treatment, my feelings matter. He and staff are top notch, all calls and messages are answered same day. His bedside manners are impeccable which is unheard of this day and age where it's all about quantity than quality. I am not pain free but It is a work in progress.

Dr Sureja cares more about statistics and meeting unrealistic regulations than he does about patient welfare. He wants everything to be black and white with no grey areas. Life is not black and white. When he is unable to fit a patient into one of HIS boxes then he wants to be rid of that person...even to the extent of trying to force tnem into unnecessary surgery. He wants patient to do what HE wants and not what works best for patient. I would NOT recommend him.

I feel that this doctor has not done his job and is letting him morals get in the way of treatment. You have to go through hoops with these doctors and do as they ask, disclose information u believe to be accurate and make one simple mistake of not knowing the proper name of a medication, and it leads to it dismissal of treatment..which was the very first visit ...they ask u to write down all the medicine u have in it system and give u a,urine test....and find something u thought u told them was the right name for it in your system then they want to use that to a drop u like a hot potato ....everyone wonders why society is the way it ...maybe if people weren't so quick to judge and listen for a change then they would understand the true pain that most of these people are in ... not all of us is out for just pain med when the ones who don't need it get a load of it and the ones that really need the help get treated like like drug addicts....I am appalled of the way some of these… doctors treat some of there patients. ...they really shouldn't be able to practice

I received my injection from Dr. Sureja this morning. His staff was courteous and helpful. He shook my hand, answered all my questions and explained the procedure before and during each step. He asked several times if I was doing alright and was pleasant during my entire visit.

I read reviews for Dr. Sureja before going to see him. I'm a worrier, so the negative reviews had me terrified. So much so, that I considered calling my doctor and asking to be referred to a different pain management doctor. I decided that I should give him a chance anyway and I could always switch doctors if I didn't like him. From the moment he opened the door and we made eye contact, I relaxed and felt safe. He was just wonderful, very attentive and compassionate. I'm allergic to steroid injections, so my pain management options are already limited. He took the time to explain to me what was going on in my body, why I was feeling pain in specific areas, etc. He LISTENED to me and he HEARD me. You should always be informed, but remember to give your own experience a chance. I've only been to see him once, but it was one of the best first appointments I've ever had.

I have been dealing with sciatic pain for several years. In 2002 I had back surgery to relieve pain from a spur in the L4/L5 region. That relieved the pain for 5 years, but it returned. I began epidural shots in the region in 2008 that helped for the next 4 years. At that point the neurosurgeon indicated the possibility of another surgery. I decided to see a pain specialist - Dr. Sureja at the Orthopedic and Spine Center in Newport News, VA. He conducted an MRI and decided that the problem could be in one of three locations in my back and hip. To rule out the L4/L5 issue, he treated that area and we found it did not help. Since then we have found the area where the pain begins, and the shots appear to be effective. I am pain free now and expect this to be the case for several months - thanks to Dr. Surejaâ??s persistence.

I began seeing Dr. Sureja about 6 months. I had major surgery over a year ago-I had a carcinoid tumor in my right main stem bronchus and in order to remove the tumor had a total right open thoracotomy. Dr. Sureja came highly recommended, but after almost a year of poor treatment I am extremely disappointed and se eking a new pain management doctor. I was diagnosed at my 6 month follow up with my doctors at the Mayo Clinic (yes, I had surgery out of state due to the rarity of my cancer coupled with my young age of 28) with Post Thoracotomy Pain Syndrome which is a chronic pain condition. Every visit with Dr.Sureja felt rushed, he was cold and hardly ever made eye contact. I felt demoralized and insulted as a patient looking for help to obtain some sort of pain relief. Every medication that was tried ( muscle relaxer, ssri's and lido patches) only gave me short term results, like a months relief tops. When I went for my last appointment and told him we needed to figure out a long term… management plan he looked me dead in the face and said "WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, WHAT? TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT?" I was so embarrassed. Dr. Sureja knows that I am a hospice nurse on my feet all day and having to lift patients, or anything over 5-10 lbs further aggravates my condition and causes muscle spasms. I have been a nurse for over 5 years and love my job, but having a chronic pain condition is starting to wear on me and I am constantly in pain and exhausted. I find it insulting that the rude women on here who posted a review stating" that people giving negative reviews are narcotics seeking or have unattainable goals". How dare you judge others pain. Is wanting to be free of pain or at least have your pain diminished unattainable? I think not. How dare you judge and cast others down for their opinions. I am glad that Dr. Sureja has been able to help some people, but I am NOT impressed.

Dr.Sureja has been my pain management Dr. for around 4-5 years now.I don't think I could find a better one anywhere.He has only one major concern for me and the end of my cronic back pain.I feel like he has made it a personal goal that one day my pain will be gone. He listens to everything I say to him and use's it to help me. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Sureja,I'm blessed to have him on my team. The whole staff at Orthopaedic and Spine center are the best. I highly recommend them.

I cannot help but believe that negative reviews posted about Dr. Sureja are from drug seekers or other patients with an unacceptable ulterior agenda. Physicians these days have to be very careful in assessing what is best for their patients and it is evident that Dr. Sureja, among most other doctors in our area, will and thoroughly study patient medical and medication history, facts as relayed by the DEA and other data management systems, and other venues to ensure that treatment rendered is safe and is in the best long-term interest of the patient. Dr. Sureja has been one of the most concerned and thorough physicians I have ever had administer health care including that for treatment of chronic pain. He will explore ALL alternatives for pain management and will not rule out any prescribed measures to ensure his patients are given the best possible care and relief. I fully recommend Dr. Sureja.
