“From Peaks to Ripples” (Gary M. Lewis) On Thursday afternoon, 6/12/2025, I was admitted into the Houston Methodist ER – The Woodlands with end-stage heart failure. I was severely swollen from fluid in my lungs and throughout my body, and I could not catch my breath. My blood pressure was 74/56, I was too weak to stand, and I had A-fib arrhythmia with every heartbeat. Immediately, I received Lasix to reduce the swelling. On Friday afternoon, representatives of my cardiology team (Houston Methodist DeBakey Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgical Associates) came to my hospital room and explained that I needed emergency treatment to correct four major heart problems: 1) Upgrade my pacemaker to install an extra lead 2) Break up the blockage in my left ventricle apex and install a stent 3) Eliminate the A-fib through an ablation in the left atrium 4) Insert a device to eliminate the regurgitation in my mitral valve However, each of these procedures comes with a potentially lethal… risk. My whole heart is quivering violently from the A-fib arrhythmia, and it will be almost impossible to correctly guide the Cath-lab instruments. The following describes a miracle Saturday morning: At 8:30 am, five members of my cardiac team came into my room, carrying equipment of all kinds. They put nodes on my chest for an ECG, ran a printout, and pronounced, “It looks terrible!” Then, one by one, each team member transmitted signals to my pacemaker. As a retired programmer, I recognized that they were updating software programs and were following a formal project management protocol. I had no idea what their end purpose was, but I suddenly felt better as the last set of instructions was administered. They then generated another printout, examined it, and Dr. Sajesh Venkataraman cried out "It’s beautiful!" The entire team erupted in cheers, for this was an astounding achievement. All of this was accomplished in about 12 minutes after their arrival. They had been developing this pacemaker programming method for cases like mine, and I was the test. My pacemaker was able to use the signal from the sole lead in one chamber to coordinate all four heart chambers simultaneously. This reduced the Qv interval between the A-fib arrhythmia waves, and they went from peaks to ripples, eliminating the compound risks due to my quivering heart. For now, I may have the only pacemaker in the world that has this capability, and therefore my name might be mentioned in medical journals around the world as they are updated to reflect this amazing innovation. Now I can safely proceed with the remaining cardiac procedures, here at Houston Methodist Hospital - The Woodlands. I won’t need to have a mechanical upgrade to my pacemaker, as it is working better than the manufacturer could have dreamed. Dr. Ali Rizvi resolved the blockage in my left ventricle on Tuesday. Dr. Sajesh Venkataraman did an ablation in my left atrium to eliminate my dangerous A-fib arrhythmia on Wednesday. These procedures were done with trans-catheter tools that they send up a vein in my groin to my heart. It is painless and each has a recovery of one to two days. Correcting the A-fib and weakened ventricle will automatically remedy the regurgitation in my mitral valve, for they are its cause. I came home Friday.
