Dr. Rami Ramzi Makhoul, MD

I thought to post about my direct experience with DR Makhoul, an exceptional colorectal surgeon in the DC area. He is an absolutely amazing DR and I would HIGHLY recommend him if you have a colorectal surgical need. I unfortunately had major surgery that involved resection of the colon and then re-attachment of the colon (major stuff). We were initially referred to Dr. Makhoul by my primary care physician (who thought he was the best) and on the first visit, found him to be caring, calm, concerned, competent, and available then and after wards to answer questions and explain things. The best bedside manner I have ever encountered. We (my wife and I ) did not take this sensitive surgery lightly and put a lot of hours into researching Dr Makoul’s competencies and surgery outcomes. We even went so far as to talk to the nurses in the hospital wings where he operates. One nurse said “he is amazing. I’d go with him over anybody.” When I completed my surgery, which went exceedingly… well, there was a lead charge nurse who had been at the hospital for 20 yrs and used to be on the colorectal surgical team working with many different doctors. She told me that the nurses call him “cool hand” (a playoff cool hand luke from the past) because he is so calm and unflappable in complicated surgery situations. The kind of thing you want to hear when picking a surgeon. I ended up having the surgery at Holy Cross Hospital of Germantown. Again, I was concerned about having surgery at a hospital that I had never heard of. The staff and nurses were ALL so nice and caring. They were all happy which shocked me because my experience was very negative in other hospitals after having dealt with with complications of my father. I spent two nights in the hospital and was out walking the same day and quickly recovered. I was walking 5 miles a day by week 4. Dr Makoul uses robotic laparoscopic tools which minimize the recovery time and how much muscle gets cut through as they don’t have to open you up. (yuk) My results went perfectly well and I was back into my normal routines ahead of schedule. He has my absolute highest recommendation.
