I have worn corrective lenses most of my life with their issues. 6 years ago I required cataract surgery which would would take several months to complete. I saw an ad from Dr, Pham about a new technique using a laser technique with a nanotechnology lenses to permanently avoid corrective lenses. Safety and Equipment Researching the procedureI learned that traditional methods use a surgeon and scalpel for lens removal. The lens removal cut must be a perfect circle centered over the iris, free of imperfections. Historically this depends on the skill of the surgeon with a steady hand. An earthquake, distraction or patient movement can be disastrous. It also depends on the surgeon health during the procedure. Was the surgeon partying the night before or under stress such from family, sleep, traffic or office issues? With these factors being perfect, it is still physically impossible that a surgeon with a scalpel to cut a perfectly smooth circle. With a laser, the surgeon is not… actually performing the cut. The surgeons skill is in their ability to select the proper parameters for the laser, and adjust its settings to accomplish the cut. Once the cut is started the surgeon interaction is to monitor procedure. Given the machines built in diagnostics, will not be an issue. It is programmed that should the beam goes the slightest amount outside the machine parameters, it shuts off. The machine is constantly monitoring its position in relation to the eye. So things like distractions, an earthquake, or the physical condition of the surgeon are irrelevant during the cut. With laser accuracy, a perfectly round circle free of any edge defects is standard operating procedure. The actually cutting time is only about 30 seconds. With this research it was easy for me to conclude that the laser procedure was much safer and accurate, with a higher likelihood of an excellent outcome than any surgeon with a scalpel. Comfort My decision was incredibly correct. The two surgeries took a week, not months. After each surgery I was able to see the next morning. A patch was used to protect the eye overnight after the surgery to allow some healing. The surgery itself was painless, the most annoyance being a drop of water running down the side of my face. Recovery was almost painless with a slight ache on the operated eye, totally controlled with an NSAID the first afternoon and pain free the next day. The temporary pain from the dilation drops before the surgery worse than pain after the surgery, Current status It has been 6 years since I had the surgery, Other than sunglasses I have never wore a pair of glasses since the surgery. My vision is better than with corrective lenses. My night vision is improved.I had mild astigmatism before the surgery. That went away as well. One negative side effect since the surgery, Before the procedure, with contacts I could slice onions with little concern or adversity. After surgery, just like everyone else, I have to cut onions by a fan, or wearing onion goggles. Cost Laser surgery with nanotechnology lenses is initially more costly. However the lenses are permanent and should last the life of the patient. Scalpel procedures usually result in the patients needing glasses for closeup work and/or reading glasses. The laser procedure with nanotechnology lenses eliminates glasses for life. Amortizing the life long costs of corrective lenses, the difference is negligible. Advantages Activities are no longer limited by vision correction. Think of contact sports and aviation. Issues A sometimes mentioned issue by other patients that I have experienced is that office waits can be extended at times due to Dr. Pham spending the time with each patient as necessary to answer questions, do the exams and evaluations himself, making the patient comfortable and assured. This may take more time than expected but is worth the wait. Experience: Dr. Pham is renowned leader in his field. He teaches around the world as well as doing research to improve procedures. He is advises equipment manufacturers and holds patents some of the procedures His training includes Neurology. This allows him to perform procedures in a way to avoid complications involving nerves. He has recently receive a milestone award for his outstanding work from UCSF. Dr. Pham is the only doctor you see. There are no handoffs to other doctors. He does have staff that are trained by him to do some of the standard tests but Dr. Pham himself does all the examinations, evaluations, and all the procedures.The doctor you signed up for is the doctor that actually does the procedure and followups.
