Dr. Randall P Owen, MD

I met with Dr Randall and he seemed really nice. He explained to me that according to my lab results I had hyperthyroidism. He couldn't tell me if one or more of the parathyroid were problematic. He then told me that at the time of surgery they will do some blood work and check if after removing the first parathyroid my issues were resolved. If my numbers were back to normal he would just stitch me up. If not he Would check the other three parathyroid. He also said that my incision would be 3 centimeters wide and the procedure would take 30 minutes. I was also told I would be under local anesthesia. The day of surgery I was told that they will have to put me under general anesthesia. That was a red flag. I asked why but the nurse said that's how it was done. When I awoke after the surgery I was in so much pain. My husband said I was in the room for over 3 hours!!!! When I was finally able to get up and go to the bathroom I looked in the mirror and was absolutely horrified!!!!! He… made an incision of about 2" wide!!! It was stitched horribly!! The reason for being that long in the room was never revealed. At the follow up visits he beat around the Bush giving all kind of nonsense answers. I am extremely disappointed! It's been 2 years now and I can't get rid of the horrible scar. I'm also having a lot of issues with my throat. A lot of pain and loss of voice. Please be aware and STAY AWAY!!!!

Dr. Owen listens to his patients and never in a hurry to leave the office, no matter how long the appointment might take. I wish all doctors were like him. He is a great specialist in thyroid surgery and a wonderful and friendly person.

Beware at all costs!!! According to his credentials he has 16 years of experience however he shouldn't be practicing at all especially performing surgery. I had the misfortune of going to Dr Owen for total thyroidectomy recently due to Graves' disease. Before the surgery he reassured me that he has done this procedure quite often however when i awake from the surgery i found out that my anterior branch to the recurrent laryngeal nerve was severed and stitched back ( like thats going to help). Im a month post thyroidectomy and had to see a laryngologist because i cannot speak due to the right vocal cord being paralyzed. Interesting being that for someone who has 16 years experience this is totally unacceptable and my quality of life has went down the drain. Not to mention i will need surgery in the near future to at least be able to communicate effectively at least be heard. Please do your homework prior to having this type of delicate surgery. Finally i recently found out he has been… sued around 5x!!!

Dr. Owen recommended that I have an enlarged parathyroid gland removed as a preventative measure for my future bone health. I was told this would be a 30 minute, low-risk, minimally invasive surgical procedure, that I would be comfortable during the procedure under light sedation and local anesthesia, that I would go home shortly after the procedure, and that the incision in my neck would be small and would heal well. However, everything about the surgery and the aftermath was a nightmare. I was physically tied down to the operating table for two hours. The local anesthesia and sedation wore off and I was totally awake with my neck sliced open and burning, unable to move because I was tied down everywhere. An opaque bag had been put over my head so no one could see my face and see that I was awake, terrified and in pain. The situation was horrifying. After the surgery I was in bradycardia for many hours in recovery. In addition, my left eyelid was drooping halfway down my eye… which I found out was the result of damage to the sympathetic nerve during surgery causing Horners Syndrome which makes your eyelid droop. The incision on my neck was poorly executed and pulled the skin in a disfiguring way. Since the day of my surgery I have had over 20 medical appointments and procedures to cope with the many problems from this surgery including a plastic surgery on my neck to try to fix the incision. The whole thing has been a terrible experience physically, physiologically and financially.

I had primary hyperparathyroidism and needed an op. Pre-op, I went for the parathyroid scans and the pathology tests at what I was told were some top-notch places. But I wanted to see a few surgeons before choosing, searched and searched and Dr. Owen clearly was superior. And guess what? The 5 hour scan at the 'top notch' place turned out to be erroneous, and Dr. Owen is enough of a scientist to find the trouble and get the right results. The team at Mount Sinai were outstanding. I woke up in the recovery room as I had requested, sitting up in bed (I get acid reflux), with my eyeglasses on, so I could see. Went home same day. Very good recovery. All better now. I am so grateful to have discovered Dr. Randall Owen. He's kind, very gentle, compassionate and patient, answers questions and even invites email. His assistant Evelyn is a treasure; she is extraordinarily kind to the patients. This was my first time at Mount Sinai and they're really knocking themselves out to make patients… feel cared for. Big difference - my go-to place from now on.

When would I ever think I could go on and on about a physician. Dr. Owen is an outstanding caring physician. His calm demenor helps you feel at ease. Dr. Owen's skill as a surgeon is outstanding. A truly excellent surgeon in his field.

I have gratitude and appreciation for Dr.Owen. He is Professional, confident in his abilities as a surgeon. A very skilled surgeon who puts his patients needs first. My experience was life altering. I will forever be in his debt.

From the first day I walked into the waiting room of his office at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, I was greeted with enthusiastic smiles and firm hand shakes giving me the peace of mind I needed to understand my condition and decide to face surgery for the first time.His thoughtful attention combined with his medical expertise and supportive staff did a remarkable job on my Hemithyroidectomy.
