Dr. Raymond Earle Bourey, MD

He constantly interrupted me whenever I tried to speak, didn't allow me to tell him my symptoms that were relevant to my sleep disturbances, spent a significant amount of the appointment time arguing with me about my medications, and refused to listen to me when I brought up how my sleep and medications were inter-connected because it did not fit his pre-conceived notions of how one of my medications should interact with REM stage sleep. When I mentioned that the particular medication does indeed affect my sleep and withdraw due to a specific nature of the medicine, he proceeded to bring up FIVE different google searches to prove me wrong. As each google search showed that my information was correct, he then proceeded to mutter to himself for a few minutes about how he actually know more because he saw a stage 3 clinical trial for this particular drug. It took up more than 1/3 of the appointment time of him arguing about my medications--to the point where I could not even tell him… all of my symptoms, and he ordered a sleep study with no regard to how my symptoms and medications interact as a result. He also belittled my intelligence several times, made fun of my husband choosing to still marry me even with knowing of my multiple disorders, and harassed me about exercise and diet even though I am recently recovering from a life-threatening relapse of two intertwined disorders that caused me to lose massive amounts of weight, caused such severe muscle atrophy that I couldn't even walk up a flight of stairs, and developed an eating disorder as a result. To which he congratulated that I gained the disordered eating because "It was better for me to just eat one meal per day, anyway". I repeatedly told him that I actually spent the last 9 months trying to recover and was still trying to recover physically and emotionally from having nearly died, which he blew off and once again congratulated my disordered eating and told me I need to exercise more than just the PT that is building me back up. Dr. Bourey treated me disrespectfully, spent the appointment arguing and talking over me, having fun at my expense as I suffered, and sent me on my way with a test that does not take into account the very topic that is so important to my condition. No patient deserves this kind of treatment, and no doctor should be allowed to act like this.

Honest review- Likes to talk about everything but the reason you are there for. He also likes to talk about retiring soon and is quick in dismissing your symptoms. These are the kind of doctors who make you feel that Western Medicine is just a money making machine. Apparently you have to be morbidly obese to have sleep related issues. Doc. did not even follow up. Sorry i don't have faith in him as a healthcare provider.

Wow!!! Where do I begin? The highlights . . . the staff was kind - that's it. As far as Dr. Bourey, a total egotistical, self-centered, quack! First, it took 4 months to get an appointment with him. He was absolutely not worth it. I waited in the waiting room about 10 minutes, and then waited in the examining room almost 40 minutes. Finally, he entered the room with a very stoic "matter of fact" walk and smirk on his face. He introduced himself and then abruptly said, "So, what are you here for?" I began to explain to him the issues that I had been having (for more than 4 months - remember, I had to wait that long just to get a freakin' appointment with him). Every symptom I explained to him, he explained away as invalid. I was so so so frustrated. Folks, I am NOT a hypochondriac. Honestly, I only go to doctors when I'm desperate and I was desperate for answers. He felt my throat and quickly told me that I had no thyroid problems. He saw no need to order any blood work,… and then announced that I needed a sleep study. He also told me that I needed to go on a 1000 calorie diet and exercise harder. That all took about 30 minutes. The remaining 60 minutes of the appointment was his rants and raves about SLUcare, about his son's lack of competitiveness , and about how he was such a awesome doctor. Believe me, I was so glad when the time with him was over. That was almost 2 hours of my life that I will never get back. After I left, I was so upset. A couple of days later, I decided to send him an email through the MyChart email program. A week later he sent me a reply to my email. If it wasn't so personal, I would post it here. I WAS APPALLED by his response. It was so rude and demeaning. This man should retire and he should have done it yesterday! I'm not sure what more to say except stay far away from this doctor. You could do better with any one else . . . even another quack like Daffy Duck! My follow up with another doctor: after a battery of blood work. My symptoms were NOT all in my head, but I tested positive for rheumatoid arthritis. I am now receiving treatment and am little by little feeling better.

I had to see Dr Bourey a number of times during my pregancy, since I have Hashimoto's. Dr Bourey was never interested in what I said, flat out calling me a liar about my condition a few times, and prescribed me medication for the opposite condition from what I had (I have HYPOthyroidism, he prescribed me meds for HYPERthyroidism). I found him to be less than knowledgeable about thyroid disease, and my maternal fetal medicine doctor made me stop taking the medicine he prescribed me because it was dangerous and unnecessary. My baby had to be delivered at 35 weeks and only weighed 3 lbs, and I'll never know if he'd have been able to go full term had my condition been under control.

As far as affect is concerned, Dr. Baurey is motivating and caring... if you have done what he has told you to do at your previous visit. I have a feeling that he could be pretty tough if he had to be. I have been to a couple of endocrinologists in the Toledo area and let me tell you... he is by far the best. He is a straight shooter and understands the challenges that face diabetic patients. I actually enjoy going to my appointmentswhich is a nice change if you know what I mean :)
