I was extremely disappointed with my experience with Dr. Romeo. He seemed far more concerned with finishing his “rounds” than taking the time to answer important questions regarding my loved one’s next steps after discharge. What concerned me even more was how quickly he seemed determined to get her discharged. He was prepared to send her to a facility with a medication that was supposed to be discontinued because it was not appropriate for her condition. Had the family not caught this and questioned it, she could have been discharged with a medication that was specifically supposed to be stopped. When a patient is dealing with new diagnoses, there are understandably a lot of questions and concerns. Being rushed, interrupted, or having those questions cut off is incredibly frustrating and, in my opinion, very disrespectful; not only to the patient, but to the family members who are trying to understand what comes next and advocate for their loved one. We were not asking for… unreasonable amounts of time or attention. We simply wanted clear answers, appropriate medication management, and a safe discharge plan. Compassion, communication, and taking the time to listen should be fundamental parts of patient and family care, especially when there are significant new diagnoses involved. A discharge should never feel rushed at the expense of a patient’s safety. I sincerely hope this experience is taken as an opportunity to improve communication, attention to detail, and coordination of care so that other families feel heard, informed, and confident that their loved one is being safely cared for.
