Through them, Dr. Widener became interested in pediatric care. She attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, then pursued a residency in pediatrics at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. After serving as chief resident her last year there, she went on to Birmingham, Alabama, to specialize in pediatric infectious diseases at The Children's Hospital at the University of Alabama.
