Dr. Rebecca Ann Zuurbier, MD

Dr. Zuurbier has a huge following in the DC area and that is because she is the rare type of physician who combines the highest level of expertise in her field with the most comforting and caring bedside manner. She is a Harvard-trained radiologist who is a leader in the field of mammography. She has saved many lives in this area and now that she is heading to New Hampshire to head breast imaging at Dartmouth, I have no doubt she will save many lives there as well. I recently heard a story of a patient who drove up from North Carolina to see "Dr. Z" for her mammogram. This is at least a 4 hour drive. It turned out Dr. Z was off that day, which the woman did not realize. Instead of letting another radiologist read her mammogram, she chose to drive back to North Carolina and reschedule for another day so she could see "Dr. Z". That's the type of loyalty she engenders. Going for a mammogram is not the most pleasant experience for a woman, but when you know you are going to see "Dr. Z" ,… you almost look forward to it! She's is the finest of physicians and the finest of human beings.

Dr. Zuurbier is the only radiologist I will see from now on. She spent an inordinate amount of time with me, and I found her to be compassionate, friendly, knowledgeable and most importantly skilled and thorough. Because I was misdiagnosed by FRC for 5 years, not because of "occult" cancer, but because of erroneous stereo biopsies and misterpretation of 7 cms worth of "benign appearing calcifications" that weren't benign, I was very skeptical going in. Dr. Zuurbier was amazing in answering all my questions. Her exam report was detailed and well reasoned, and she personally took my questions related to surgical options to her tumor board to get answers from Sibley's oncoplastic surgeon and pathologist. She called me a couple of times to follow-up on the results of her review and the input from her tumor board. She has earned my trust, and I will travel from VA to see only her and will follow her whereever she practices. I am very grateful for her attention and care.
