Poor communication with patient and family when he took care of my father in the ICU. Admittedly, the patient had an extended stay and complicated course while under his care... but it's no excuse. Unsure as to why the hospital assigned him to my father's medical team as he was not able to answer many questions. He was, on more than one occasion, unfamiliar with the hospital course, what specialist have been consulted, plan of care for the day, or even what day his patient's surgery was scheduled. We were the ones updating him on his patient's status, lab results, CT scans, etc. Many times he walked into the hospital room and without even laying a hand on the patient. How are you supposed to "assess" and write a progress note on a patient this way? His colleagues from the hospitalist team were just as bad(I think it's called Trinity Hospitalist)- they all took a very hands off approach when they are providing weekend coverage for their colleague. We heard "please dont ask me… any questions, I'm just covering for Dr. Rodriguez today." Then why even bother coming??? Perhaps the most appalling encounter is that he told my sister that his "hospital numbers look bad" because of my father's extended stay at an acute care ICU... We get it. The sad truth is that medicine is a business after all; the hospital stops making money if a patient stays in the ICU beyond the anticipated 5 days. But it is NEVER ACCEPTABLE to discuss these things with a patient or their family members. We care about our dad- not your numbers. I, too work in the medical field, and after my encounters with him and his colleagues, I am a thousand times more empathetic with my patients. Would NOT recommend him or his hospitalist team. Stay away if possible. I wish we could have.
