Dr. Ricardo Herminio Brau

I had surgery long time ago when back surgery was a taboo. He is the best neurosurgeon you can find in PR!

Dr. Brau became my doctor as part of a referal from my neurologist. He is so caring and professional there are not enough words to describe. I was in a major medical institution and Dr. Brau was out of the country and the same night he arrives, from the airport he goes straight to the hospital I was admitted and comes to see me, who does that? He reviewed my case and immediatly explained to me what were the next steps providing me with a lot of confidence and peace. He is an amazing, caring and intelligent human beign. Thank you Dr. Brau for giving me life.

This review is in English and in Spanish / Esta resea es en ingls y en espaol.------Dr. Brau, as many have said, pays utmost attention and care to what you say and takes his time to properly and accurately diagnose his patients. I went to him when I was 17 years old because of disc herniations. I have Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and Degenerative Disc Disease that he diagnosed and I had my first laminectomy at the age of 17 with him with fantastic recovery. His bedside manner is kind, warm and attentive -- he makes you feel very safe and communicates very well. I had a second laminectomy in 2004 at the age of 24, but in this case because I was in a car accident and re-herniated a disc and herniated a new one. Surgery, as the first, had very good results. He does not opt or suggest surgery right off the bat. Actually the second surgery was more of my insistence, since I didn't want to go down the same slow traditional treatment path I endured the first time. But the healing and recuperation… for both has been great. In fact, I recently got an MRI that shows very little scar tissue, which I attribute to the doctor's knowledge and skilled hand. Also, now that I know more about my conditions, I SO appreciate he didn't do fusion, since a lot of doctors do fusion when it's not even really necessary, and the rods used for fusion can cause pain in cold climates or when it rains. He also remembers what he saw during surgery and explains with details to you how he saw what he saw and how he decompressed. He really cares. And for those who don't know, he was the Director of Neurosurgery of the University of Puerto Rico last I heard. He is the doctor I trust with no reservations or doubt. Even now living in the continental U.S., I still prefer to travel and see Dr. Brau when it comes to my back than seeing doctors in my area, because of his genuine professionalism and kindness.------Como muchos han mencionado, Dr. Brau presta atencin a todo lo que le explicas de tus sntomas y se toma su tiempo contigo para poder hacer el diagnstico ms acertado. Comenc a ir a su consultorio cuando tena 17 aos a raz de discos herniados. Congnitamente, tengo Estenosis Espinal Lumbar y Discos Degenerativos que fue este doctor quien descubri y diagnostic. Tuve mi primera ciruga de laminectoma con este doctor (es el nico que me ha operado) cuando tena 17 aos con excelente recuperacin. Dr. es un sueo de doctor: atento, amable, clido, le importan sus pacientes de verdad, es excelente en educar y orientar y un muy buen comunicador -- en fin, d mucha seguridad. Con l, tuve una segunda ciruga de laminectoma en el 2004 cuando tena 24 aos, pero esto fue a raz de un accidente en el que estuve envuelta, en el que el carro fue prdida total. De hecho, el doctor no es precipitado en cuanto a recomendar ciruga. Esta segunda ciruga fue ms mi deseo, porque no quera esperar y pasar por ms dolor. Y eso me gusta del Dr. Brau, que no es el tipo de doctor que rpido quiere operar para hacer dinero. Pero claro, ya si el dolor es muy crnico y la condicin provee, pues l opta por lo que dar alivio a su paciente. De esa segunda operacin, igual que la primera, la recuperacin fue excelente. De hecho, recientemente los resultados de mi MRI denotan muy poco tejido por cicatrz, y tengo que atriburselo al conocimiento y buena mano del doctor. Tambin, ahora que conozco mucho ms de mi condicin, le doy mil gracias al doctor por no haber hecho fusin como parte de la ciruga, ya que s de muchos doctores que les gusta hacerla an cuando no es realmente necesario, y eso causa dolores cuando el clima est fro adems de inmovilizar cierta parte de la espina dorsal. Me encanta del doctor tambin que l recuerda vivamente todo lo que vi de tu espalda cuando te oper y te describe qu vi y cmo hizo la descompresin, y an aos despus se acuerda, lo que obviamente es bueno, porque as sabe cmo va a proceder. Es un doctor con real vocacin que le importan sus pacientes. Y para los que no sepan, al menos lo ltimo que recuerdo de hace varios aos es que Dr. Brau es/era el Director de Neurociruga de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Es el UNICO doctor en quien confo ciegamente y sin reservas, y an viviendo en los Estados Unidos continentales, prefiero ir a Puerto Rico cuando necesito ser evaluada, por su profesionalismo y amabilidad genuinos.

After waiting for three months to get an appointment with dr. Brau, his secretary called us to let us know that Dr. Brau can not see my brother because he had been operated on by another doctor in the emergency room 3 years ago. My brother had an accident and ended up with a cervical spine injury and We wanted DR. Brau to give us a second opinion but he refused.
