Dr. Richard Edward Burney JR., MD

Dr. Burney is the best! I wish I would've gone directly to him the first time around. He takes time to explain things in detail so that you understand. He has extensive experience and has seen it all. Dr. Burney (and his team) are top notch.

I waited two long months to finally meet Dr. Burney. First, he was roughly 10-15 minutes late for my appointment. Meanwhile, his assistant, Dr. Reed, discussed basic information with me, including my previous diagnosis, at which he scoffed and sarcastically said that the doctors who issued it weren't very accurate (nice, very professional!). Dr. Burney arrived, and we began to discuss my ailments; however, he was VERY condescending. Five minutes into the acutal session, he began to examine me with female nurses present. I am male, and the female nurses gasped and made some very uncomfortable noises during my exam, e.g. "ummm." I thought that this was very rude, and in retrospect, I should have asked them to leave.After the exam, Dr. Burney basically said that I was imagining my symptoms and that it was all stress, suggesting that I was hunched over a monitor for too long on a daily basis. Very soon thereafter, he quickly departed while I was trying to ask another question. Encounters… with this magnitude of arrogance are hard to come by.Next, Dr. Reed said that he would discuss potential diets with me, and he left. Ten minutes pass, and I have to ask a nurse to find out where he is (apparently nobody knows). He finally comes back, and we review diets.Here is the best part: my GI thoroughly advised me to have a colonoscopy performed to rule out certain ailments. After Dr. Reed and I discuss diets, I ask him if I should still have a colonoscopy performed. He said this: "You can have it done if it makes you feel better."I went on to have coloscopy performed, and guess what, the prediction I mentioned to Dr. Burney (my GI also said that it was 100% true) ended up being validated by colonoscopy. I was livid that these two could have prevented me from seeking the treatment I deserve - not to mention the blatantly erroneous advice. Apparently "it's all stress," and I should "rethink the way I live my daily life" - VERY arrogant.My opinion of U of M Hospitals is quickly dwindling over time. I've met a few really good, caring doctors, but these ones are the ones whom I would avoid.

Dr. Burney is one of the most compassionate doctors that I have ever encountered. He is supurb in every sense! He communicates wonderfully with his patients and still answers my emails after four years following my colostomy. He is the BEST of the BEST!!!
