Dr. Richard Kevin Gilroy, MD

From the first visit, I knew I was in the presence of a unique, kind, caring professional. No matter what, I felt confident with his research and knowledge about my liver issues and overall health. Funny and welcoming which is a great change from dreary drs. At times. Good or bad news, you always know your being treated with respect. Love him. I highly recommend him for your liver and stomach issues.

When I first met Dr Gilroy I thought he was a bit of a jerk. After going through a couple of office visits, I learned he just had a sense of humor that actually was in line with mine. Over the course of 5 years, I came to realize what a great Dr he is. I remember early on, after I was diagnosed with liver cancer, he promised me he would get me transplanted. After a year of chemo, endless blood draws and office visits, he got me on the transplant list. Within 3 months of being on the list, I had a call that told me a matching donor liver was ready. During one of the follow up visits after transplant he reminded me, "I told you I'd get you transplanted". I have the highest degree of respect for his knowledge, friendliness, sense of humor and experience of liver disease and transplantation. I remember being really sad when he told me he was leaving KU Med. I wish him the best of luck and he will always have a special place in my heart.........and liver!

Dr Gilroy, has never been on time always 1- 2 hours late, doesn't respond to my daughter's primary Dr. For at least 2-4 days if that. My daughter had a flare up that could have been ended sooner if it was taken care of quickly, but instead lasted 2 months longer. I wouldn't recommend him to anybody. He trash talked the other Dr that had helped my daughter for the last 12 years. As far as I am concerned his lack of action could have cost me my daughter's life.

A person who took he time, which he explained was why he was 20 min late. He made a diffenfece in my life

Dr Gilroy met us to discuss my mothers recent diagnosis of abnormal Liver enzymes. He told us that there were several things this might be and then expressed concern about my mothers weight loss and that this was more important to be sorted than my mothers enzymes. He spoke to us about what it might turn out to be and then ordered the tests and gave me a number to follow-up and apologized for being late as he was held up by an earlier patient and a conversation he had to have, we left and we got the tests and my mother "liked his accent" and she reminded me that "we were there a while". This while was important as we both gained an understanding that the tests might turn out to show a problem, which they did. When we called him a week later (he gave his personal phone number) he spoke about the scan and that we needed to see a surgeon, Dr Kumer, and that he would chat to us the same day. On that day he explained that my mother had pancreatic cancer and that it had been there a while… and our appointment that was scheduled he cancelled as he had presented the case to Dr Kumer and no surgery was possible. My mother died last week. My mother always spoke of Dr Gilroy fondly as, he took the time when we needed it. I just wonder if the 2 people with bad reports may not have liked him because he had taken extra time with others that was needed and this is why he was running late. When I read what they wrote it appeared more personal that objective. My objective assessment is the doctors we saw before him did not take the time to prepare us. He did and he also gave us his personal number to call, which others never did. So I guess he is not able to please everyone.

Dr. Gilroy is the best doctor you will ever have I think. I was in his care for a transplant. He and his team did wonders for me went out of their way to help me. He has moved to another state but if I get sick again I will be going to him. I have never met a better doctor that knows his stuff like he does. I would not be alive if not for him and his team at KU at the time. Timothy Schmitt was my surgeon I would recommend him also.

My husband was one of Dr. Gilroy's first patients in Omaha. Dr. Gilroy was great during my husband's transplant and followup. I developed liver and other problems 6 months after my husbands transplant and called Dr. Gilroy's office. He made time to see me the next week and I have been his patient ever since. That was 6 years ago. I was extremely happy that he came to Kansas City as that's where we live. Dr. Gilroy is still my doctor and has seen me through some very difficult treatments. He is still my Dr and he works with all my other specialists. He has always given me as much time as I've needed when I see him and I can count on him to follow through, and to give me a straight forward, upfront answer to any question that I have.

Dr. Gilroy really knows his medicine. Best doctor ever. I can't say enough great things about him. Traveled 3 hours to Kansas to see Dr Gilroy and glad we did, he diagnosed a problem that not one doctor in my hometown could find. He is the greatest! If you have to wait for an appointment, he is well worth the wait. GOOD GUY, DR GILROY!
