Dr. Richard William Hertle, MD

My son, John Meehan went to see Dr. Hertle when he was only one and he is now 27 years old. He had a severe nystagmus and a terrible head tilt. I worried he would never be able to drive or play sports. I had been to Wills Eye, John had two operations and nothing was helping. Someone then said to me “you need to go see this young doctor at children’s hospital in Philadelphia, he’s doing amazing things with children, Dr. Richard Hertle.” I made the appointment and when we met him he said, at the end of the day, if your son’s condition is what I think it is, I will be able to help him. Dr. Hertle took us under his care and treated John for many years to come. John was his patient from Philadelphia to Bethesda then to Ohio, he was a miracle in my son’s life. John went on to play hockey in college and with the help of Dr. Hertle got his driver’s license and is thriving. If you are lucky enough to have Dr. Hertle as you doctor, just know that you could not be in better hands. … Dr. Hertle if you read this, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!! I will never forget what you did for my son 26 years ago!

Parents of a child with Nystagmus have no idea how blessed they are to have, Dr. Hertle. Due to his appx 30 years of researching Nystagmus, he has the expertise to properly, as well as safely, treat us. He is honest, up front, warm, humble & intelligent. His staff is typically quite pleasing & competent as well. He is a busy doctor, which means planning your trip to see him requires a couple or few months in advance. Patients travel from all over, including over seas to receive his care. The trip is worth it. He performed an eye muscle surgery on me, which ultimately changed my life for the better. I cannot say what another’s outcome will be, as I am not a doctor, he is the one that will guide you & he does so with his extensive education leading him.

Dr. Hertle did surgery on me this past Friday, he was very good with remarks and what I should do, and not do, to early to know if it worked or not, had surgery on both eyes, at the moment they are very sore and painful, I will follow up with results later

Dr.hertle is amazing he has seen me since I was a baby I am 13 now! He has done so many surgerys on me and I have been amazed on what he has done it has been a miracle he actually followed us! He used to work at Pittsburgh children's and then he moved to Akron children's! I totally recommend going to see him!

Dr Hertle has been AMAZING with the diagnosis, treatment, and follow through of our son's nystagmus. Our son had the surgical procedure to correct his congenial nystagmus in 2008. The improvement noted was instantly and he has thrived in his academics and extra curricular activities because he can actually see now. He goes back every other year to see Dr Hertle and Dr Hertle is absoulutely wonderful with him and so encouraging!!! We have a strong family history of nystagmus and until we met Dr Hertle, there were no other alternatives for treatment. He has been a blessing to us and although he is now over 120 miles away from us, he is well worth the drive for his expertise. We can't thank him enough for giving our son the best opportunity for a normal, high functioning life.

We are very lucky to have this doctor available to our child. He made me extremely comfortable knowing my daughter was being put to sleep and around her eyes needing cut. He is very honest and answers all questions and concerns. He makes sure you're prepared for everything going to happen.

Dr. Hertle helped me see the world. I had eye surgery when I was 16 years old from dr. Burnstien and went back to see about wearing contacts and started wearing contacts at 29 years old. I was happy that I went back to Akron children's hospital. I did have 20/200 when I was little and went from 20/60 laat year and between 20/50 to 20/40 which means I will be able to drive soon.

Dr. Hertle and his team performed a terrific nystagmus, strabmismus et. al. surgery of the eyes of my goodson René. We travelled twice from Germany to Akron. Dr. Hertle changed the life of my godson René. We are so grateful. Dr. Hertle is a miracle doctor. Dr. Hertle we thank you so much!

Dr Hertle is both a gifted surgeon and caring physician. He genuinely cares about the patient, their eyesight and is comfortingly confident. I highly recommend Dr Hertle and his staff for any eye problems. Thanks Dr Hertle for fixing my eyes!

He diagnosed and treated my nystagmous after 67 years of opthamologists failing to diagnose, failing to understand, and being unable to undertake or recommend any helpful approach. I came away knowing more about nystagmous than nearly all opthamologists, and with very significantly improved vision. I wrote a paper about it: My New Eyes.
