Richard J. Loewenstein M.D. is the founder and Medical Director of The Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt Health Systems, Baltimore, MD, ranked by U.S. News and World Report as among America's 10 top psychiatric facilities. The Trauma Disorders Program includes a 22-bed inpatient unit, an outpatient program, a fellowship program, and research, consultation and teaching components. He is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and Yale University School of Medicine where he did his residency in psychiatry. He did a research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, MD. He is the author of over 75 papers and chapters on sleep disorders, consultation-liaison psychiatry, dissociation, dissociative disorders, and trauma disorders. In 2012 he and his co-authors were awarded the Pierre Janet writing award by the International Association of Trauma and Dissociation for the paper: Evaluation of the evidence for the trauma and fantasy models of dissociation in Psychological Bulletin. He and co-authors were awarded the Richard P. Kluft award for the best paper of the year in 2012 in the Journal of Trauma and Dissociation: Where are we going? An update on assessment, treatment, and research in dissociative disorders as we move towards DSM-5. He has authored chapters on treatment of Dissociative Amnesia, Dissociative Identity Disorder, and Depersonalization in the APA's Treatment of Psychiatric Disorders, including the chapter on Treatment of Dissociative Amnesia (2014) and co-authored the chapter Treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder (2014). He is co-author of the section on Dissociative Disorders in the Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, 8th- 10th Editions. He won the Lifetime Achievement Award of the ISSTD. He is an advisor to the Treatment of Patients with Dissociative Disorders (TOPDD) Study headed by Bethany Brand, Ph.D of Towson University.
