Dr. Richard L. Shapiro, MD

Dr. Shapiro is a top surgeon with exceptional skill and a wonderful/caring personality. I was lucky enough to find Dr. Shapiro from a friend who highly recommended him. In Oct 2020, Dr. Shapiro performed a double mastectomy due to the brca-2 gene mutation. I could not ask for a better surgeon. Dr. Shapiro answered all of my questions and made me incredibly comfortable. The surgery went great! I can honestly that Dr. Shapiro saved my life and I am forever gratefuI. I had a large tumor in my leg. I went around to all the top doctors and hospitals in NYC. Had 4 MRI’s. After careful evaluation of my choices, I picked Dr. Shapiro. My instincts are fine tuned. He background is extremely strong. He trained other good surgeons. But the teacher is still the master in his case. He did my surgery fast. And he did it in a better technique and way the others could not do or achieve. He has a sharp wit and humor. Don’t be thrown off by hes strong presence, it is needed to do what he does so well. . He is all business and lives and breathes surgery. Knows all the in and outs. Something that is needed to make fast correct decisions during a surgery. And my incision was only a fraction of what others what have done. I am very happy he got all of my tumor intact and he stitches better than my plastic surgeon. He also has a great surgery room staff. He controls it beginning to end. After my 2 years of stress...Dr. Shapiro took that away. He’s a genius in my… opinion and I am lucky I found him. Dr Shapiro is not only an outstanding surgeon, he is an outstanding person

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Shapiro. First, he was on time for my first appointment and my follow up appointment (after surgery) he was EARLY! Second, his "bed side manor" is amazing. He puts you immediately at ease from the moment you walk in. Even on day of surgery he kept me smiling. He is very thorough and speaks to you so you can fully understand your diagnosis and everything that will be happening during surgery. Procedure went great, healing nicely! TRULY THE BEST!!

He is rough. He doesn't call back until hours later when he is paged. This was the first time i called him and a true emergency (i had a post surgery infection. Good that his nurse prescribed antibiotics on his behalf which i started taking right away. I first called at 3:30 pm then again at 9:00 because i was shivering and in a lot of pain. Then at 10:30 again getting ready to go to the emergency room. He called around 11:00pm and told me i had a fluid buildup on my leg, that I should put ice and come on Monday 10:00am . I spent a horrible weekend in pain waiting for Monday 10 am. My turn came at 11:30am.. This doctor is VERY busy. It's like he does his best to accomodate you but since he alaways so many patients to see....It feels like a factory at high production speed.

Routine exam by my dermatologist showed that a small brown point on my cheek is Melanoma. It was devastating news for my family and me. My dermatologist referred me to Dr. Richard Shapiro of NYU Langone Cancer Center, telling me that he wants me to go to the best plastic surgeon in NY. Fortunately Dr. Shapiro accepted my insurance and was able to perform the surgery. Dr. Shapiro has really gold hands and performed an outstanding job. My doctors, friends, and relative all were amazed by his job. In addition, he has a very pleasant personality and explained every detail of the process to me. NYU staff is also really good. Everyone knows what are he or she doing, paid me as much attention as I needed, and projected confidence and professionalism. I was especially impressed with Elen Byrwe, Senior Nurse Clinician in Post Op Room and Christine Strom, Senior Medical Secretary. I strongly recommend Dr Richard Shapiro and NYU Langone Medical Center for plastic surgery.

I have highly appreciated Dr. Richard L. Shapiro practice at the NYU Langone Medical Center. Beyond his personal qualities (simplicity, honesty, intelligence) , he has set up with his team an outstanding process that insure any patient to be treated with the highest professionalism. - Each step of the process (from patient identification, patient one-on-one communication, preparation, surgical procedure per se, post, ..up to the follow-up the day after) has been made in an effective and professional manner. - Nurses, Med students in residency, and associates know what they have to do and do it perfectly. I would definitively recommend Dr. Shapiro and his team.
