Review of Mid Atlantic Pain Specialists – Dr. Robert T. Chapdelaine, M.D. I wish I had read the reviews before visiting Mid Atlantic Pain Specialists in Pennsville, NJ. Today, I saw Dr. Robert T. Chapdelaine, and I don’t have anything positive to say about the experience. After seeing him in person, I can absolutely understand why so many reviews share the same concerns. This doctor does not respect his patients or their medical conditions. He does not value your time. He does not speak to you with empathy. Unfortunately, I found him to be dismissive, unprepared, and ultimately uncaring. I am a disabled adult living with Latent Autoimmune Diabetes (LADA), also known as Type 1.5 or Type 3 Diabetes, as well as Diabetic Gastroparesis. I’ve been under pain management care for 7 years in both Florida and Maryland. After recently purchasing a home in Pennsville, my doctor referred me to a local pain specialist — which led me here. I truly wish I had researched more thoroughly before… making the appointment. The Visit: Wait Time: My appointment was at 11:00 AM, but I wasn’t seen until 12:45 PM. I sat in the waiting room for nearly 1 hour and 45 minutes, watching three patients who arrived after me go in before me. Forms: Despite spending about an hour the night before filling out the online intake forms, I was handed a redundant paper packet asking for the same information when I arrived. The Doctor’s Approach: Dr. Chapdelaine walked in and didn’t even make eye contact. I had to introduce myself. He asked very basic questions (like my primary care physician’s name and when I last had a gastric imaging), clearly without reviewing my chart in advance. It felt like he was just going through the motions. The Breakdown: When he finally asked about my condition, I explained I have Latent Autoimmune Diabetes. He immediately replied, “An autoimmune disease doesn’t tell me anything about your condition.” I clarified that I have Latent Autoimmune Disease — also referred to as Type 3 Diabetes — and began to explain further. He cut me off to say, “Excuse me, I’m speaking,” and launched into a general explanation of autoimmune diseases that showed he wasn’t understanding or willing to engage with the specifics of mine. When I pointed out he wasn’t listening, he became visibly irritated. I tried once more to clarify, and when I said “Excuse me, I’m speaking” in response to my being interrupted, he clearly didn’t appreciate being spoken to the same way he was speaking to me — and he walked out of the appointment. Summary: This doctor did not respect my medical condition. This doctor did not respect my time. This doctor did not treat me with empathy or basic human decency. This doctor was just the worst. Do I think this review will change his behavior? Honestly, no. From what I experienced, it seemed he stopped caring long ago. But I’m writing this in the hope that it helps you avoid the same experience. You deserve a provider who listens, who learns, and who treats patients with dignity and respect. This was not that

I went for my first visit the other day & it was also my last. I walked out on him after only talking to him for 5 minutes. I have a lot of health problems that cause me to be in a lot of pain. I can’t do anything anymore this is why I decided to see a pain management dr. I also have a fear of drs & get bad anxiety when going to see one so this was hard for me to do but I did it & regret it. The first thing he did was question me about my teeth before even asking me about the pain I was in which is why I was there. If I wanted to talk about my teeth I would have went to a dentist. Yes I have bad teeth which is hereditary in my family but because of my fear & anxiety I haven’t been to one but that’s none of his business & he embarrassed me in front of the tech that was in the room going on & in about my teeth. Then he listened to my chest, my reflexes then my throat. After that he asked what I do for work & I said I don’t work. He asked why & I said because of the pain I’m in I can’t do… anything anymore (which again is why I was there). He totally blew me off saying oh sure you can do anything & I said no I can’t my back is really bad. But he kept saying yea you can do anything. I wasn’t going to sit there & argue whether I could or couldn’t do things. He should have said ok let’s get some tests & mri’s done to see what’s going on & he should have been more caring knowing that I do have lupus among other things that cause me a lot of pain. I was hysterical crying because of how he treated me. He saw me as young & assumed because I was young I wasn’t having the pain I was saying I was having. I’ve been steadily getting worse since it started when I was 30yrs. old. Just because I’m very young compared to most of his patients shouldn’t mean I’m not in real pain. He was horrible & made my anxiety & fear of drs even worse than what it was before. With all the people that have written bad reviews in multiple sights I can’t believe he is still in business.

Seriously, I don't envy pain management specialists. They have to deal with a whole bunch of "entitled" addicts for a living. Dr Chapdelaine is at his best in the procedure room, giving lumbar shots etc. Definitely in his element and great at what he does. If you are willing to try anything to feel better, like shots, he's your man. Yes, you have to deal with routine drug tests, yes it might make you feel a bit like an addict... take it up with the DEA. Not his fault for trying to remain in compliance to prove his legitimacy perpetually to the Feds. I trust him to help me find relief. Only been a few months, and yes I could find more relief if he were a pill pusher, but it wouldn't be lasting and my functioning would be limited to getting more pills...like some of these reviewers here who had been taking deadly doses of narcotics daily. Don't let them discourage you. They just tweaking.

He's coward to prescribe any medications cause he might get in trouble! Doesn't care about patients. Just laughs and pokes fun at our other Dr's, who happen to e Neuorosurgens, orthopedic surgeons, REAL pain management physicians. Treats all patients like they are drug addicts! Only cares about getting paid for worthless office visit! True A-hole!

I started out seeing Dr. Chapdelaine 3 years ago and I was already on 100 mcg. of Fentanyl patch, a very strong dose which took my pain from an 8 down to a tolerable 3. Every office visit, once a month, I had to wait anywhere from an hour to 3 hours just to see Chappy. As the visits rolled on and my body was not responding as well to the Fentanyl patches, I would tell him I was still in pain. He switched me over to Morphine Sulfate 60mg. ER tabs and 7.5/325 percocets. These did not relieve the pain as did the Fentanyl patches had. The more I told him that my pain was worse, he lowered the dosages of my morphines to 30mg and my percocets to 5.0/325. The final straw for me was when he lowered my morphine to 15mg and no percocets. I was on Cymbalta 60mg for the last 2 years I saw Chappy and 70% of my visits, he would forget to send my script to CVS. The Pharmacist at CVS contacted Chappy's office numerous times and never received a reply. I had to call the nurse at Chappy's office and… just about beg to get the script. This to me is NOT restoring HOPE. I was burned over 64% of my body and I am in constant pain and he did not seem to care. ALSO, his office would call my cell phone the morning of my appointment and change my appointment time, but, I have to give the 24 hour notice of appointment changes. Bull S**t.

WHERE DO I BEGIN?? I waited to see him for 3 1/2 hours and was forced to take a drug test. He said he would prescribe what I need - the regimen I was on at the other doctors office. They told me I had to return in 2 weeks to be seen again and I was forced to supply another drug test! The nurse practitioner came in and told me they refuse to prescribe me pain medication because of the DEA! My husband yelled why did the doctor tell her he was going to prescribe it then and force us to come in twice? They gave lame excuses and told me to smoke marijuna! I told them it doesn't work! I have severe injuries. Do NOT go here! I should have listened to the bad reviews!

Horrible only worried about his money, will smile act like he cares and then leave the room and talk about you.

This guy was so nice to me. He really seemed to care about what was causing my pain and fixed my problem. I had the worst shoulder pain ever. I couldn't sleep at night and I couldn't do my job properly and I have to work to support my family. Dr chap fixed my shoulder with a couple of injections and told me it would feel better in a few days and it did!He wrote me for some medication in case it didn't work but I didn't need it at all! I don't know what all these negative reviews are about. One of them seems to be advertising for another practice that my my doc use to work at which is weird - Thisdoc is why I went there In the first place and I followed him when I left! It's true you have to wait but he really takes his time and definitely seems like he cares, not just another pill pusher.
