Dr. Robert Herbert Howland, MD

This man is a disgusting person. The way he treats people with mental health issues is REPREHENSIBLE. He needs his license revoked and possibly lookid into for criminal malpractice. He's going to push someone to suicide. This is a man who only has passion for a paycheck. Remove him IMMEDIATELY.

I have been seeing Dr Howland for approximately 2.5 years. He struck me as a bit odd and quiet at first. But but at the same time he listened and asked questions and continued my care of meds that I had been on through previous doctors at the belfield clinic. Come to a recent phone appointment ( COVID is over) but works for me no need to sit face to face. He called me 20 minutes after scheduled appointment, I understand he's busy we all are. I changed my lunch break for this appointment. Tried to contact him through my UPMC app. And was on the phone trying to reschedule, since my lunch 1/2 hour was 2 minutes from ending when he called. So I picked up and let him know that I didn't have much time. He asked if I had any concerns and the first minute is kind of a blur. Then out of nowhere he started yelling at me. He just went on and on and I was the one trying to tell him I understood, trying to calm him like I was the physician. The call ended with okay I can schedule my next… appointment and please just send my meds to the pharmacy. Need to get back to work. He yelled- "BYE" disconnected. I was asking him about other medications to treat my diagnosis. He gave me a runaround on reasons that people don't like certain meds, would not even allow me to try another medication. It was very odd. Has been very hard for me to find this medication at local pharmacies and pharmacies farther away. So changing the type of med that still treats the same symptoms could have been pretty simple surely didn't need to be yelled about and put down. I was crying by the end of the phone call. Now understand these comments. I thought they were all a bunch of crazy mental health patients. I'm the normal one that gets along with the doctor. Talks about turmeric tea, baseball, and never had any prior issues. We all have bad days and I get that. But the way he acted was bizarre. Inappropriate. And I will get that phone call pulled and he will be reported. Whether or not action is taken I don't care it's just the fact that it needs to be brought to somebody's attention considering I am not the first one that has been treated this way. If anybody heard the phone call they would be in shock

He is completely unprofessional, rude, and arrogant. We heard more about his so called accomplishments and ego than we did about mental health. He refuses to listen to his patients and continuously talks over them and others attempting to speak to him. He does not take into consideration a patient's medical history, concerns, or opinions. The way he interacts with patients, their family members, and case workers is completely unacceptable, especially for someone in the mental health field. Don't waste your time here...find a real doctor.

Be CAREFUL. This guy can cause you a great deal of damage, whether it's by what he writes about you in your record or the shock and upset he can cause you if he decides to fight with you. If you were assigned to him you should reschedule with someone else. LISTEN: If you don't take my advice or the others who have written about him, and you go see him....then at least heed this bit of advice: BE CAREFUL. He's a weirdo as a person but he's not stupid. Don't fight with him unless you are prepared to make a formal complaint. You would do best to get in to see a different doctor (which I realize, they make it difficult to do that). But if you wish to take issue with him, make sure you get under the care of someone else first before he can write even worse things to discredit you. He will try to make it impossible for you to see anyone else. If angered he takes very personal pot shots at you and say things that no psychiatrist should ever, ever. ever say! It's incredulous. When he… badgered at me it was as if he was talking to some other patient that he never got to tell off. It was crazy. I was stunned. I got the feeling at the last appointment that he was recording it...and that's not a sensation that I have had at any other time in my life nor any time since. It was as if he was saying things that were just fiction or out of left field for someone else to hear. I just sat there stunned as I watched this guy morph into the creature that people on this site and others have so aptly described.

So rude, instead of helping I left the office in tears, he had no compassion and genuinely did not care about me. Do not go to him, more likely to make you feel worse then help you overcome your mental anxiety and depression.

He's the most flagrant example of a psychiatrist that has more psychological issues than his patients. He's mean-spirited and a pompous fraud. How he keeps his job at Western Psych is unknown to the many patients that he has screwed over. You will notice his weirdness right away, but it will really be obvious by about the 4th visit, when you will start wondering if you are on candid camera or if he's for real. Sadly, he is for real. He's not a part of the real psychiatric community. He's part of the psychiatric INDUSTRY. Run, don't walk!

I do not recommend Howland. He is very inflexible and does not care about patients. He bragged about many of the papers he has written and other accomplishments. Which I did look up and they were mostly editorials he wrote on his own in a nursing journal. I did not trust him to make medication changes.

The guy is like some bad teacher you had in junior high school. He's every bit as awful as everyone says he is. He will say that people say things about him that they wouldn't say if they were in the same room with him--don't you believe it! He's had plenty of people tell him that he's rude, condescending and arrogant but he doesn't listen. In fact, it's glaringly apparent that he enjoys victimizing his patients. He's a ridiculous, tedious old queen.

Has a lot of experience.

He's a good doctor, he's just not overly talkative! This is fine. My last doctor could be very disconcerting and was always putting me on medications that they do not even use here in the United States so I am happy to have an American doctor!
