Dr. Robert Alan Kanter, MD

You have been my savior! Amen!

This doctor is like Doc Martin on PBS. Terrible people skills and wants total control of visit. Every time I tried to say something he told me to "damp it down, just damp it down." He treated me like a body with a chart and I will never return. He is detail oriented and takes copious notes while talking outloud!

I believe Dr. Kanter is very knowledgeable and thorough. Unfortunately, he frequently thinks out loud about the options before he decides which road to take with my treatment, and by that time I'm thoroughly confused. As for bedside manner, the best I can say is that he can be very abrupt.

Dr. Kanter, Just a note to let you know that you have an excellent team running your office. To a person all of my questions and requests have been met with positive professional courtesy. The willingness to do the little things like fax my lab orders to EFM in a timely manner and to explain all of the actions required on my part have made my experience with you and your team a very positive one. With the assistance of you and your staff I have seen a marked improvement in my over all health.

Dr. Kanter didn't even bother to make eye contact. He yawned twice, and I was convinced he fell asleep for a minute while I was talking. I'm sorry to have bored him so much during the appointment I was paying him good money for!This is definitely NOT the place for someone with type 1 diabetes. His ARNP (Nicole Woodruff) and dietitian (Karen Munger) are not well educated about type 1 diabetes. The advice Nicole gave me was not accurate or helpful. It felt like something my grandma (who means well but doesn't know about diabetes) would say. Karen Munger treated me as if I were a number, not a human being. She used most of our appointment time to complain about other patients. This, combined with the sales pitch feel I got from the office and the lack of awareness about the condition they were supposed to be helping me with, left me feeling very disappointed.

I went to see Dr. Kanter for the first time recently for weight management. I waited an hour to meet with him and was shocked that no one ever communicated a single word to me regarding their lack of organization or tardiness. Their attitude (including Dr. Kanter) was that they didn't really care as they have enough business so they don't have to treat people with fundamental respect by simply communicating (as that would require accountability) and even an apology for being late. It gets better...During my meeting with Dr. Kanter (remember, I am a new patient and this is my first visit after waiting an hour in is office), there was no apology, no introductory handshake, nothing. He came in and sat down and never looked up once. I have spent 15 years in the medical field and as in any other field there are some really amazing health care professionals out there, as well as a few that you wonder why they chose to "help" people as a profession. How does a doctor meet with a new patient… and not look at them a single time? Simply stated, I would not recommend him, but that seems to be apparent by the majority of people that were frustrated enough to take the time to post something here (as I have never done this before).

Dr. Kanter's office resembles a small Costco warehouse of weight loss drinks which I find creepy and slightly unethical. My husband is the patient and he has never liked him. I have met him a few times and found him scruffy, distant, and uncaring. Another doctor told us that he is very thorough and detailed. We don't find this to be true. My husband is out of one of his prescription insulins. The pharmacy is unable to get a prescription from Kanter; and we have been unable to make this happen. This is a serious oversight!!! Dr. Kanter's voice mail is a complete spiral into nothingness. I was unable to page him after office hours. It is not a life threatening emergency so we don't want to dial 911 [as they suggest] nor do we want to go to the ER [expensive and overkill for the problem]. In a recent appointment, Dr. Kanter wrote down several things on separate small pieces of paper. He did not write down, nor did he ask the pharmacy to write, directions for a new medication he… prescribed. The pharmacy had to call him.We are disgusted and looking elsewhere but have heard that good endocrinologists are tough to find.

This experience was like no other in my many years as a Clinical Pharmacist and patient. Dr Kanter's meticulous care of his patients is achieved by his paying an unusual amount of time and effort in understanding all necessary elements of the patients medications, diagnosis and changes from visit to visit. He knows his patients' ailments, concerns and needs to solve each and every condition. In my book he is TOPS!

I go frequently to see Dr. Kanter because he really cares and requires followup blood work, consultation, etc. He is willing to work with me on prescriptions that Medicare will pay for and he's not satisfied until he thinks he has your "numbers" under control. In the past the wait time has been long, but when you get in to him, you have his undivided attention, and can spend as much as 45 minutes with him, looking at all aspects of your condition/situation. So the wait is worth it -- just don't schedule anything close afterwards. My wait has been from 5 minutes to nearly an hour (more recently, it's been shorter).
