Dr. Robert J. Kim, MD

Having been a patient of Dr Kim for more than three years, I find him to be clear-headed, capable and attentive. On the minus side, I find him disappointingly quick and opinionated in settling on a plan of action, with little interest in considering alternatives. Doctors work under pressures of time, especially under the Medicare system; but in cardiology, where diagnostic and treatment choices sometimes require a subtle balancing of risks and cost and consequences, I hope for a doctor able to invest more.

Dr. Kim is one of the two or three most impressive doctors I've had the good fortune to treat me over my 79 years. He is very smart, very expert, thorough, fast, and a great communicator. Recent Office Visit Each time I visit Dr. Kim my experience could not be improved on in any way. He represents the excellence of Weill Cardiology. His clinical skills could never be surpassed, and have never been in my many years as a cardiac patient at other hospitals; and I received an extensive open heart surgery in Los Angeles at UCLA Reagan with the Chief of Cardiac Surgery. That was a benchmark. Dr. Kim sets me at ease. He is not 'warm and fuzzy;' he is kind, approachable and responsive to any concern, which requires patience. He is incredibly thorough and complete. It's clear that he has a full grasp of all my medical conditions, not just my cardiac ones. His process is fastidious. When a doctor walks into a room in a crisply pressed white lab coat, his name above the pocket, over a freshly pressed shirt with a neck tie, it's gives the immediate impression that he means business. He sits and faces well organized pages of data, none of it wrinkled or dog eared, which is often the… case in other offices. I have written this before: one of his great strengths, absent in all other doctor relationships I have had, is that he creates a 'through line' relating to all other cardiac, neurological, surgical, etc., and other procedures I have had, and draws them together; he then leaves me with a clear, clinical plan. It's obvious he has reviewed all the blood work and testing before him. He picked up a situation where a drug had been prescribed by another doctor that would affect my kidney function; I have stage 3 kidney disease. Needless to say, Dr. Kim is not a nephrologist. But he picked this up, where others had not. He made a recommendation and noted it for my internist; he did not make the change himself. That might be seen as arrogance by the prescriber, and Dr. Kim is not arrogant. Everything is noted so that his opinion will be passed on. He has done this a few times. He has both my cardiac care and all other aspects of care in mind; that is usually a massive disconnect in modern medicine. His time management in the office is disciplined. He addresses everything completely. And he listens to me, noting anything of clinical significance. I recently found that in his after visit notes, he incorporated the comments I had made to him, which he felt were conspicuous, as related to the event I was in his office to address. I saw him days after a week long hospitalization. The 'through line' drew together three different branches of medicine, my treatment by each, and he left me with a single clinical picture. These things are valuable to a patient who often must sort through piles of of discharge papers, and individual reports in a portal; all complicated and often confusing. Dr. Kim leaves me with the entirety of my case, distilled into a logical format that is easily understood. That is a talent that comes from discipline and respect for the patient. This is much more than the Hippocratic oath; and employed by a caring physician. It is a pleasure to be treated by Dr. Kim. He inspires confidence and calm. With my clinical picture, he could describe a diffuse picture. He does not. He deals with the matter at hand without drama, but always in a positive way. At this point in my care, with different medical exigencies, I am grateful for that positivity. As I wrote in a previous review, the structure he leaves you with is 'you are my patient, these are the things we must deal with, and we will work together to accomplish that goal.' I leave with a certainty. I can say that if he were suddenly recommending an open heart surgery, I would not even break a sweat. In this day and age finding a doctor who practices in both the science and the art of medicine is incredibly fortunate. Dr. Kim a very complete physician. I trust him. I had concerns the evening before my early morning catheterization. I called cardiology from my hospital bed. Dr. Kim appeared by my side the next morning in the cath lab.
