Dr. Robert Tim Kunau, MD

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Kunau during my time of training at the U. Texas Medical School at San Antonio. Although this was over 30 years ago, I still marvel at his knowledge of renal medicine the genteel manner in which he shared his knowledge. I would occasionally walk down the renal division hallway on a lonely Saturday morning. The only person that I would ever see at that time would be Bob Kunau, working in his office ... not occasionally, but EVERY Saturday. After participating in a scheduled nephrology fellow's luncheon with a visiting professor, the chief of the nephorology division at the Washington University Medical School, Dr. Saulo Klahr, I made up my mind to request that Dr. Kunau allow me to work in his lab. Dr. Klahr had been very specific in pointing out the impeccable quality of the research that was characteristic of Dr. Kunau and the high regard with which he held of him. I have never regretted the decision to work with him. After hiking to… what I thought was the most secluded place on earth, the "Window" at the Big Bend National Park, I had a chance encounter with Dr. Bob Alpern, the Chief of the Division of Nephrology at UT Southwestern Medical School. He was there with his wife. When he learned that I had trained under Dr. Kunau, he and his wife proceded to tell me how much his incredible depth of knowledge had helped them in their research endeavors while Dr. Kunau was briefly located in Dallas. When I consider the superb quality of the education that was available to me from the luminaries at UTHSCSA, I regret that I wasn't more fully aware enough to express it at that time. And so ... I would like to now give my thanks to Dr. Bob Kunau for having shared inspiration, knowledge, and providing motivation by observing his love of medicine.
