Dr. Robert Irwin Leventhal, MD

I can’t speak for others but I have suffered years of depression and health issues because he misdiagnosed me back when I came to him for help, I have a very strong case of why I suspect myself having celiac disease based on my strong reactions to wheat and vitamin D and Iron deficiency, he was very impatient and couldn’t even let me finish talking about my symptoms and told me I have IBS just by his “gut” feelings, i almost begged him for him to eventually reluctantly give me blood work order to clear my concern of these warning signs of celiac, till this date I wasn’t sure if he ever reviewed my test result, years later as my health vastly decline from what seems to be unexplainable causes I finally got diagnosed this time correctly, and guess what? I have celiac disease. After years of suffering and thousands of medical bills seeing by different doctors doing all kinds of tests trying to narrowing it down. So no I don’t recommend this doctor to anyone based on my experience, nothing… can reverse the damage gluten has done to my body for the past few years.

I have yet to see so many reviews of a doctor detailing incorrect diagnoses. I wish I read them before my appointment. He was dismissive of me and his staff. I heard him ask as I was falling asleep "why is this patient having a colonoscopy?" I guess he thought I was unconscious. This did not inspire confidence.

Man not Dr. Should have his license suspended for malpractice. After a colonoscopy performed by him, told me everything was fine only to find out from another real Dr. I had cancer and needed radiation and chemo for a large tumor.

Misdiagnosed stage 3 anal cancer. Told me everything was fine. Thank God for my gynecologist Dr. Benzoni, who sent me to Hartford Hospital to see Dr. Cohen and started the ball rolling to save my life. Leventhal is the worst most dishonest man I ever met

He has been treating me for 20+ years and my continuing experience has been excellent.

Dr. Leventhal was the worst doctor I ever had. From the minute he walked into the room he already had written me off because I was young. He told me that people just "complain too much" and everyone has constipation and pain (I was going for 7 days without a BM). He also wasn't listening as he repeatedly asked questions about things I had already told him about. His bedside manner was terrible. He made me feel completely unwelcome. After he did nothing for me I left feeling depleted and a few weeks later started to have a lot of blood in my stools among many other issues. I can't believe how rude and unprofessional he was. I gave him one star because there wasn't an option to give less. Thanks for nothing.

By far the worst doctor I have ever been to. When I switched to him at age 21 I had already been diagnosed by my pediatric gastroenterologist with Crohn's disease. At the time I started seeing him I had been having signs of a flare-up for about a year. My pediatric doc referred me to him because she was not able to control the flare-up anymore, as she did not have visiting rights at the Yale adult hospital. At my first visit, after explaining my history and symptoms, Dr. Leventhal quickly assured me that I was not having a Crohn's flare-up, instead I had IBS. I questioned this, telling him that I was sure it was Crohn's because I always felt better for about two weeks after a remicade infusion. He disagreed with this, saying "remicade doesn't just stop working, and this is not Crohn's" and gave me a prescription for a medication for IBS. Flash forward three months and it is still not working, so he gives me a stronger prescription. Still not working. I went to him again, still in pain,… and told him I had lost about 30 pounds in 3 months because I couldn't tolerate food anymore. He told me that I could stand to lose a few pounds and that nothing was wrong with me, despite all of the evidence I had that proved otherwise. Finally, after several ER visits, Dr. Leventhal finally consented to a colonoscopy, which did not show Crohn's. He told me, "I COULD do a capsule endoscopy, but that would be an unnecessary procedure." That was the last straw. I left his practice and found a new doctor, who upon my first visit scheduled the capsule endoscopy which revealed, in her words, one of the worst cases of Crohn's she had ever seen. She then ordered another blood test which showed an antigen in my blood which made my remicade treatments ineffective after the first couple weeks. Unfortunately for me, I wasted several years of treatment with Dr. Leventhal, and my Crohn's is still so bad that no other treatments are effective. My next option is surgery. If Dr. Leventhal had just ordered those two simple tests, my quality of life could have been infinitely better. He is extremely arrogant, and yes, he does think he is God.

This man preformed a colonoscopy on me after an extensive GI Hemorrhage where I passed out from blood loss in the emergency room. He said my colonoscopy was great except for a fissure. -- (It was actually an anal lesion and not a fissure). When I had complications, and called him and scheduled a follow up, he told me everything was fine in the 2 minutes he took to meet with me. Everything was NOT fine and I am now going for surgery thanks to my fantastic and extremely knowledgeable gynecologist,who actually listened to my symptoms.

I saw Dr. Leventhal and he is by far one of the best gastroenterologists that I have seen. He was attentive and had a great bedside manner. After my colonoscopy he answered all of my questions and concerns.I highly recommend this doctor to anyone.
