Dr. Robert G Meltzer, MD

I went to Dr Meltzer for a Inguinal Hernia, on first visit he was very informative and said I needed to have surgery. He confirmed hernia by exam. Said I would be off work for 4-6 weeks. I setup surgery for a few weeks later. Went to the hospital Texas Health HEB and the staff there was very nice. I saw Dr Meltzer right before surgery and said everything would be fine. Surgery was about an hour in all with prep etc. I saw him again after surgery in recovery said it went well. I went home a few hours later after recovery. Was walking down the street that same day, had pains meds (Hydrocodone) that day and switched to Advil the next 3-4 days. Surgery was on Monday and I felt very good on Saturday morning. i walked every day, I am not one to sit still. Pain was mostly moderate and Icing area several times a day was very helpful all week. Burning was most of pain. Had staples taken out a week later which was quick. Burning has stopped and very little pain. Sue has been helpful also. (S.… Foster)

This is the worst doctor ever ! , my husband had inguinial hernia surgery last year by this horrible dr Melzer. my husband has excruciating pain since surgery , the mesh was put in so tight it warped itself the nerves . After several complaints and calling his office , This doctor pretty much refuse to talk to us .My husband has had pain and a pulling sensation in his growing area since the surgery . Today a year later another doctor is removing the synthetic mesh and cutting off an entrapped nerve and putting in biological mesh . Hopefully this will help with the pain .

If you're looking for a doctor who explains things clearly and has a great bedside manner...this is NOT the doctor/surgeon for you. He hardly spoke to us! After a fairly major surgery, Dr. Meltzer told me my husband's "surgery went fine" and "You can see your husband in about an hour." That was it. Not how surgery went, nothing about what he used during surgery (mesh, staples, etc), nothing about what to watch for, nothing. Not a word. He told me "surgery went fine" and left the waiting area. The woman next to me had just had a consult after her husband's surgery, with another surgeon. Her consult lasted 10 minutes. I learned more about HER husband's surgery than my own husband. I assumed Meltzer would meet with us in the recovery room since he hardly spoke in the waiting room. When I asked for him, the nursing staff said he'd already left. The nurses didnâ??t even READ the instructions he left. And apparently weren't told what they were by Meltzer. For example: NO carbonated… beverages. The nurse actually gave my husband 2 (yes, 2) Dr. Peppers before I got to his room. We had just had this same surgery (on the opposite side) 4 months ago with a different surgeon. Surgeon number #1 told me all about my husbandâ??s incisions, the mesh she used, what to watch for at home, food, after-care, cleaning his incision, what to call her for, etc. She spent 10-15 minutes with me after the surgery. Dr. Meltzer spent 10 seconds, I'm not exaggerating. Surgeon #1 also gave my husband additional antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, AND pain medication. Dr. Meltzer only prescribed Tylenol #4. Even after I asked for additional antibiotics. My husband had a different reaction two days after surgery and we were both panicking. We called the after-hours number. Dr. Meltzer responded VERY quickly (within 6 minutes), but once again, told me everything was "fine and normal" and hung up. This was a worker's comp surgery, so we had no choice in surgeons. If we ever have to have a surgeon again, you couldnâ??t pay us to see Dr. Meltzer. I would not recommend him if you want explanations, questions answered, a bedside manner to calm your fears, and clear instructions on after-care. The nurses at the hospital even said â??He is a man of few words.â?? Yes, hardly any at all. If we had not had a previous surgery, I would have had no idea what to do at home to assist my husband's healing. Thank goodness I had all the instructions from the 1st surgery, 4 months ago. My family is still angry and it's been over a week since surgery.
