Education
Having earned his B.S. degree in Zoology from the Clemson University in 1979, Dr. Miller went on to receive his DMD degree in 1983 from The Medical University of South Carolina. After dental school, Dr. Miller completed an orthodontic residency at the Medical College of Virginia in 1985.
In Practice
After completing his orthodontic residency, Dr. Miller served proudly in the USAF where he was Chief of Orthodontics at Clark Air Base in the Philippines for three years. Dr. Miller began practicing in Culpeper in 1988 and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1992. Dr. Miller is a past president of the Virginia Association of Orthodontics. He is a pioneer in the area of orthopedic correctors, having developed the Flip Lockâ„¢ Herbst device in the early …1990's. More recently, he assisted Dr. Duncan Higgins, the inventor of the Crossbowâ„¢ device, to broaden its use as an efficient overbite corrector and our most state of the art device used just before braces.
Continuing Education
Since his initial work with the Flip Lock™ Herbst, Dr. Miller has been an innovator in several other areas of orthodontics. He has lectured throughout the world to many orthodontists seeking creative new ideas to better serve their patients, and currently enjoys lecturing to orthodontic residents throughout the US. His current lecture topics are precision bracket placement, temporary anchorage devices (TAD’s), Class II correctors, office system efficiency, improving staff relations, and treatment protocols for unique orthodontic appliances.
He and his wife are taking the McLaughlin two-year course to expand their base of orthodontic knowledge by studying under one of the most highly regarded orthodontists in the world, Dr. Richard McLaughlin. Dr. Miller is the author of numerous professional publications in orthodontics. He holds membership in the American Association of Orthodontists, the World Orthodontic Federation, the Southern Association of Orthodontics, Virginia Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Virginia Dental Association, and the Northern Virginia Dental Society, and the Leader of the Spear Study Club of Northern Virginia. He is also a member of the Northern Virginia Orthodontic Study Club.
Family Life
Is there life away from the dental chair for Dr. Miller? Along with fun activities such as fishing, boating, snow skiing, traveling and tinkering in the garage and garden, "Bob" loves to spend time with his wife, Juliana, and their two boys, Ronan and Jonas, who are students at Highland School. The best part of his day is arriving home to two boys yelling "DADDY!"
