Dr. Robert C Sanborn, DDS

It pains me to write this because they are an extremely nice group of people, but Dr. Sanborn caused great injury to my daughter by moving her teeth too quickly. My daughter had Invisalign. One tooth in particular (her incisor) needed quite a bit of movement. He first was pushing for rubber bands, but they made her extremely dizzy from the pressure. He then really pushed her to change her trays quickly, even though I felt she might need more time to adjust. One red flag was that her teeth weren’t tracking after a few consecutive trays and we eventually had to get new ones made. She probably needed more time in each tray! Near the end of her treatment, she started getting pain in her incisor. Her dentist (did not do an X-ray) chalked it up to the Invisalign treatment and felt it would settle down. She finished her Invisalign last July. She had intermittent pain that seemed to be getting more frequent and it took forever to get the proper retainer (that’s a whole other story). I thought… perhaps the fact she didn’t have her retainer for months and had to wear her last tray could have been the reason for the tooth not settling down. In any case, her pain became worse and worse over time. What originally was a dull ache became a zinging pain. Her new dentist felt that a root canal was her only option. After we saw an endodontist, he explained that the trauma from moving the tooth too fast caused injury and inflammation to the periodontal ligament and then it affected the root. She had the (very expensive) root canal and was still in pain a month later. After having her dentist and endodontist reevaluate her, they believed that wearing her retainer at night was putting too much pressure on that tooth and the periodontal ligament was not able to heal properly. Now, she is unable to wear her top retainer at all. So, all that time and thousands of dollars has been for nothing! She is slowly getting better (she has good days and bad days). I really feel like Dr. Sanborn’s office has become a mill, going through patients as quickly as possible, not taking time to tailor treatment to each individual patient. My child is paying the price for this kind of care! In any case, please be an advocate for your child, and don’t blindly trust a dentist (or doctor). Everyone responds differently to orthodontic treatment, listen to what your child has to say and your gut!
