Dr. Roberto L Vargas, MD

Dr. Vargas' fellowship training focused on molecular diagnostics as applied to Microbiology, Oncology and human genetics. At the completion of his fellowship Dr. Vargas joined the RGH Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and assumed duties as Assistant Laboratory Director responsible for Microbiology, Chemistry, Molecular Diagnostics and Point of Care Testing. In 2016 Dr. Vargas became the Laboratory Director and Acting Chair of Pathology for Unity Hospital. In 2017 he was named Associate System Chair for Acute Care Labs and Pathology, a newly created position within the integrated laboratory service line. Dr. Vargas serves as the Department Liaison to the RRH Clinical and Medical Informatics clinical groups, working to optimize the capabilities of Care Connect. Dr. Vargas serves as the Department liaison to the Excellus Medical Policy committee and as a member of the Rochester Regional Health Laboratories Clinical Pathology Council. Dr. Vargas is a member of the Core Faculty …for the RGH Clinical Laboratory Technology program and serves as the Program Medical Director. Dr. Vargas is interested in all aspects of laboratory diagnostics and has been instrumental in optimizing diagnostic capabilities and turnaround times in various areas of the laboratory. He also works closely with Infectious Diseases faculty, Infection Control and the RRH Antibiotic Stewardship Program. Dr. Vargas likewise serves as the system subject matter expert for Microbiology and will continue as an Assistant Laboratory Director for the RGH Elmgrove Laboratory, overseeing ambulatory Microbiology.
