Dr. Ronald Harter Spiegel, MD

Wish I could give a 0. Brought child in for concussion/headaches. Provided no treatment plan, most of the visit discussed "scientific evidence" and that there was none backing certain care, treatment or symptoms. Waste of time. This "doctor" shouldn't be practicing - he provides no care or assistance whatsoever.

I brought my daughter in, age 13, to be seen for ongoing cranial pressure that has persisted for 2 months (and ongoing). She has an extensive health history where her symptoms have never followed textbook. I shared this, and instead of listening and giving me the floor to share he went "mmhmm, yup, mmhmm" over me while I spoke. This happened repeatedly throughout the appointment. He didn't listen to my point of sharing that we can't treat her like textbook, and instead continued to view her through this narrow lens. He performed simple tests, and asked her if she was able to live her life normally. When she said "yes" he basically checked out and said there's nothing he could do. He told me he could give me a "false diagnosis." I found this statement to be disrespectful to the point of the appointment. I was not there for a false diagnosis but for, at the very least, an interest in who she is and what brought us to him in the first place. We came in with the only potential belief that… the pressure may be due to a migraine. He said we can't diagnose it as that based on the Statistical Manual for Migraines. However, based on Migraines there is still that potential. My daughter left crying because the doctor pulled that possibility away from her (however, I do not agree with his statement that it doesn't fall under migraine, because based on the American Migraine Foundation, it still does). He treated us throughout the appointment as if we were there for him to simply sign off on a preconceived diagnosis that we brought in with us (which was not at all the case). I asked him if he saw a lot of patients like this and he said "yes." So, as we walked through his office door he immediately assumed we were there for our own diagnosis. I was very disappointed in this appointment and his bedside manner.

My goal is to inform parents that are considering or already seeing Dr. Spiegel at Noran Neurology in Minnesota. He is by far the worst doctor we have ever encountered in our years of raising our children. The facts of our experience are as follows. We were referred by our pediatrician after our 13 year-old daughter began experiencing seizure like symptoms. We had been to a couple of doctors (ent, gen prac) already and it was time to see a pediatric neurologist as nothing was definitive. Minute one of our experience we noticed a smug and very indifferent individual. We told him her story. He asked a few basic questions, performed a quick physical exam and asked us what we wanted him to do. After some very unnecessary negotiation he reluctantly scheduled an appointment for an EEG (measures brainwaves at a time of a seizure). Our daughter wore the EEG at home for 24-hours and the results, based on his professional assessment, was no seizures were present. His exact words… were, ‘there is nothing I can do, but she could try this medication’. Note: The first thought for readers might be that she didn’t have had any episodes during that timeframe. Just know that is simply not the case. We observed them and she also ‘hit the button’ when they were happening so we know they were actively being captured. We took him at his word and being caring parents, continued to bark up many wrong trees to find out the cause of her episodes. Fast forward a year plus to our last hope, the Mayo Clinic. They prescribed an EEG immediately (after an amazing 2-hour initial consultation) and we learned that she in fact, had 15 seizures in the 24-hour observation period. It was an extremely disappointing diagnosis. She endured months of sleep deprivation, confusion and frustration unnecessarily. Note: the 24-hour observation was in a room with an overhead video camera capturing every seizure. Nurses would rush to the room to help and see if she was aware and conscious by asking her questions. It was amazing. It became clear to us that this doctor was only going through the motions. He gave her a diagnosis that followed us throughout our process and blocked seizures from everyone’s focus. He had zero bedside manner, failed at making an obvious (and important) diagnosis and jumped to prescribe a strong medication recklessly without proper diagnosis. Go to Mayo, stay away from Spiegel and Noran.

We had a lot of meetings with this dr and we love him! He doesn't give up and listens 2 ur opinions! Very nice, has great bed side manor, he is very down 2 earth and is very knowledgable! I don't know where we would b if we didn't have him for a neurologist!

My children have been going to Dr. Spiegel for over 4 years now. He is always attentive and caring. His calm demeanor is great for children. He always provides lots of information for each stage the child is in such as what foods to prepare, medicine doses, and carseat safety.
