Dr. Roy Shaked, MD

I’ve never had to “battle” with any other doctor for prescription refills like I do with Dr. Shaked. EVERY visit we have the same conversations as he challenges why I’m taking each prescription. I only take three, ALL which are inexpensive, ALL were prescribed by specialists, and ALL work extremely well to control potentially serious conditions without side effects. How can a doctor suggest to just stop taking an RX with NO facts, NO tests and NO consultation with a specialist? This is an extremely dangerous way to make prescription decisions and he also doesn’t believe what you tell him when trying to describe why specialists prescribed the medications, IF he even listens. Why not refer a patient to a specialist if he feels a prescription is not needed? While challenging a medication I’ve been taking over 40 years and which a specialist advised me NOT to ever stop taking, he finally said, “I’m not going to argue with you,” and then got up and told me, “We have nothing more to talk… about.” So he threw me out of his office! My mother died from a stroke and father died from a heart attack, both whose doctors negligently failed to prescribe common medications and tests which could have prolonged their lives.

The nurse came into the room and sat me and said 'have you met with Dr Shaked before?' I responded I had not and she replied 'well he likes to take his time with patients so hopefully he won't be too long'. To which I replied 'well that's a good thing for me!' And she agreed. I could get him taking his time and talking to the elderly white gentleman next door that he took about 20-25 minutes with. When the Dr walked in he looked at me and said 'you've seen be before haven't you?' To which I replied I have not but I've been with Kaiser a while. The exam then took place: 1. I don't feel the Dr examined me thoroughly and was rushed to get me out as I was the last patient. He said I should get a Covid test to which I responded that external discomfort of the right side of the neck is not a symptom I've ever heard of and he then repeated I should get a test several times almost dismissing my complaint 2. After asking me if I was 'a worrier', I explained to him that I rarely ever get sick… so I get concerned when I feel anything abnormal especially in parts of my body such as my neck. I then joked 'and when you Google stuff about bumps in your neck, you know everything says cancer'. The Dr literally said 'You don't have cancer' and 'there's nothing wrong with you' which is mind blowing he can diagnose this with touching my neck for 2 seconds. While I pray and honestly believe he his probably correct, it's very discomforting to feel gaslit and that I should feel foolish for coming in to check on something that concerns me. Kaiser promotes to take care of our bodies, that's what I did and he made me feel foolish for doing so. 3. At the end of the exam, he asked if I drank alcohol, to which I said yes, 2 or 3 drinks per day. I asked if this affected his 'diagnosis' and he said there's nothing to worry about and there is nothing wrong with me and said I should 'follow up on this with my primary Dr, Dr Lal when I have my physical soon' 4. Upon leaving, he said 'If you're worried about the weight, maybe lay off the 3 beers per day and it will help'. I was simply awe struck by this comment and already felt ashamed I even came in so I simply nodded and ended the meeting. This comment was the nail in the coffin as I never said I had any issues or was worried about my weight and I never said I drank beer. To make these assumptions and voice his opinion about something that has absolutely nothing to do with my reason of visit is uncalled for and unprofessional. I also felt these assumptions were made about me due to my appearance and last name, perpetuating a stereotype of overweight Hispanics that obviously only drink beer

Dr. Shaked takes time to listen to your complaints and will order tests, as required. Before joining Kaiser I was misdiagnosed for numb toes and feet and sent to a podiatrist. But three years later I joined Kaiser and Dr. Shaked ordered a battery of blood tests and I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune nerve disease that only affects 1 out of 100,000. There is no cure but I am thankful he found the proper diagnosis and I am getting ongoing antibody infusions to slow down and control the disease. Highly recommended doctor!

I saw this doctor when I first started with Kaiser. I told him of my history. I told him that previous blood tested showed that I had some issues with my hormones, and he told me that blood tests are subjective, and i looked fine. I told him of menstrual issues that I had, and he, while knowing the history of cancer in my family, suggested that I take deproprevera to help. Without taking blood, without really knowing what was going on. I then told him that I have had muscle and joint pain for over 10 years. I asked what could be done, and he recommended that I see a psychologist to help me cope with being in pain, because it is called chronic pain, and it is called that for a reason, because it just isn't going to go away. Again, no blood tests, no mri's, no further questions about the exact pain issues I have had. It was an experience that not only made me angry, but also made me never want to go back to Kaiser again.
