Dr. Russell Alan Hayhurst, MD

I have been a patient of Dr. Hayhurst for close to 20 years. Found him in the phone book. Since glaucoma runs in my family and I had an incident that caused me concern, I made a appointment with him. Dr. Hayhurst told me I had lost 50% of the sight in both eyes! (My former Dr. dismissed my concerns.) After a year of exhausting all other options, I had surgery on both eyes. I have never missed an appointment with Dr. Hayhurst and I know it is because of him that I am able to see. He also preformed my cataract surgery. I passed my drivers license renewal without having to wear my glasses! Sometimes Dr. Hayhurst sees over 50 patients in one day so he doesn't have much time for idle talk, but he always answers my questions. I feel he is the best glaucoma Doctor around and I feel blessed to have found him.

We were recently sent to dr Hayhurst by the VA for care of my husband's glaucoma. What a great doctor with a great staff! Thanks so much Dr Hayhurst for taking care of my elderly husband! You are the best!

I will be changing physicians after this visit. Let me share this "what just happened". Helper comes in to assist Dr Hayhurst and begins cleaning silver instrument shaped like a spoon with alcohol swab. I lean over to see. She hands it to Dr Hayhurst. I said "I thought you were putting that in my eye". His response was showing me dates on the chart, "see these are the times I have done this". Not saying anything else. He places the instrument in my eye and my instinct is to flutter my eye from the foreign object being placed in my eye. He then puts his hand behind my head pushing me toward the instrument, shoving my eye into the spoon like instrument, repeating again with the other eye. Then he just walks out. Helper seemed uncomfortable. Then some other helper just peeks her head in after Dr Hayhurst left, probably noticing his unrest self-convicting demeanor upon leaving the room. The issue here is the force used to complete this exam. No explanation of what was about to happen… or chance given to participate or help with the exam. I'm going elsewhere.

I can’t believe all the reviews saying Dr Hayhurst is rude. He is professional. He is smart. He is brisk, because he is busy, because he is an expert. He is not rude. He definitely gives excellent care. I’d recommend him to anyone.

OK, so some of these people say he is rude. Let's allow that he isn't Miss Personality of 2018. However, why do you get referred to a specialist -- one with a top reputation in his field. You go because another doctor thinks you have something wrong that may need care the specialist can provide. First, what some of these reviewers call rude I call professional and businesslike. He knows what he is doing, does not recommend procedures or medications you don't need (Ya know, "First no no harm" -- it's called the Hippocratic Oath and all MD's have to swear to it), and he is available if you have an emergency. You go to a glaucoma specialist in the first place because another ophthalmologist, or as in my case optometrist, thinks you may be at risk for going blind. The fact that Dr. Hayhurst or a staff member confirms that you may be on your way to partial or full blindness is not "uncaring" -- it is called "telling it like it is". I have been going to Dr. Hayhurst for 8 or 9 years and am… glad he is there. And he doesn't have to sparkle at me for me to appreciate that he is a fine human being.

I honestly felt like I wanted to cry in my appointment. The staff is very friendly, they are very professional about what they do and I feel like I'm getting good treatment. That being said Russel Hayhurst is incredibly rude and harsh. He seems to have little to no empathy when discussing things with you. When you're a doctor who deals with people who experience difficulties in life with vision everyday, you'd think you would develop a little bit of a heart. Not the case with this Dr. have gone to him for 10+ years and finally have had the last straw. Will be looking for a doctor who actually is KIND. Maybe he should learn from his techs because they are sweet hearts.

Very rude and did not take the time to discus my disease. I wasn't even sure that there was a problem when I made the appointment, but it is there and he told me about it like he was selling fries. He only cared about his money.

Most impressed with the staff. Physician seemed busy but still professional. His manner seems quick but direct and to the point. I actually prefer that to sugarcoating my disease. Would recommend mostly due to staff - knowledgeable and very caring.
